HEVC HDR to x264 non-hdr

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:
Hi guys, apologies if this is the wrong sub-forum but I'm hoping for some help...
I have UHD HDR videos that are in x265/HEVC. I need to transcode to x264 (current hardware not fast enough for HEVC) and I also need to make them non-HDR as my UHD TV isn't HDR and my players (PC, Android and the TV itself) show the videos as very washed out with barely any colour.

I've been using handbrake to transcode HEVC to x264 but I'm not sure of the best way to do this, can anyone advise?

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.

If the sources are properly flagged, HB will do the colorspace conversion. Fix the flagging and your conversion will be fine.

Unfortunately HandBrake can't convert HDR to a standard color space.

You can use a player like mpv that can reproduce the file with the right colors.

Nope. Colorspace conversion is only done in case of RGB -> YUV (using a Bt.601 matrix) or similarly fully-incompatible colorspaces. Otherwise we just pass the color information indexes through to the output and let the playback device or software sort it all out…

If you're familiar with the picture degradation that occurs when mismatching 8-bit video levels (PC 0-255 or TV 16-235), then you'll have an understanding of the HDR->SDR problem.

HDR introduces 10/12 bit video levels which cannot be accurately transferred to 8-bit quantizers using simple linear conversions, especially so when you factor in dynamic light levels.

There are some SDR software players which detect the presence of HDR metadata in a source and automatically apply a video level correction filter that simulates 10/12-bit contrast & saturation in 8-bits (with limited success). Any HDR hardware player will need SDR screen support to have any chance of doing the same. Despite sounding silly, companies like Technicolor are working on chipsets that do this, to facilitate an incremental upgrade path for consumers.

Unfortunately, for your situation, what you need to do is to bake the correction into your encodes, and this ain't gonna be easy. You will either have to:

1) Use open-source scripting to read the HDR as 10-bit, high-quality dither to 8-bits, apply whatever automatic SDR tone mapping you can get functioning, write to 8-bit x264

2) Use commercial studio software to transcode 10-bit HDR sources to 8-bit SDR intermediates, manually colour grade every scene, write to 8-bit x264

3) Wait for HB to implement a workable compromise HDR->SDR filter that you can turn on, the same sort of thing found in MadVR & mpv.

Yeah, fun fun fun.

Honestly, whilst there is terrific value in upconverting SDR to HDR, there is ZERO value in downconverting HDR to SDR. I mean that, none!

You might think that a higher quality source equals a higher quality encode, but the amount of picture information that is mutilated in the HDR->SDR downconversion process will always produce a WORSE result than transcoding from a high-quality SDR source. I know, because I've been there, done that.

Here's the simplest advice I can give to anyone regarding HDR: if you DON'T have HDR equipment, NEVER use HDR sources! Don't buy them, don't "acquire" them, completely avoid them. You'll be a lot happier.
