PC Crashes after about 15 minutes into conversion

Post by Viperxl007 »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:

Anytime I start converting a Blue Ray rip after about 15 minutes. the PC will crash and reboot. I've found a workaround to the issue where if I set the handbrake.exe process affinity to use anything less than half of my CPU the job will complete without issue. I've monitored CPU temps, updated firmware/BIOS/etc and everything is normal (normal high load CPU temps, ran a 6 hour memtest and memory checked out fine, etc)

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.

Windows 10 64 bit, Ryzen 1800x CPU, Asus X370-Pro Mobo, Handbrake v 1.0.7

If there was any exception or error displayed, please copy it and paste it here:

No exceptions caught, just a hard crash/reboot. No blue screen.

Please include the scan or encode log:

Generally speaking, crashing the PC itself is an indication that your temperature has exceeded the CPU's limit. Do you have a temperature sensor application installed, to monitor it? There are a lot of them out there, like "Core Temp", which will give you real-time status.

Handbrake will usually run your CPU as fast as it can, for as long as the encode takes. Many machines are built with fast processors, but not enough cooling to run 100% for more than a few minutes. Most motherboards can be set to throttle the CPU frequency if the temp gets above a certain point. If that throttling doesn't occur, the CPU itself will shut down when it hits its internal limit.

On my secondary encoding machine, I have "adequate" cooling, but I still kick in an additional fan when encoding, to reduce the CPU stress.

Thanks for the reply. I have a liquid cooling setup and upon visual inspection (running the Ryzen Master software) the temps never exceeded 72.5C.

Does Core Temp have a logging function? Problem is trying to catch what the temp was at the crash. I agree it feels like it's a CPU overheating thing, but I have the throttles in place and I haven't been able to see that theory play out in the evidence yet but I am definitely looking for any possible way to nail it down.

Thanks!

Bad hardware, it's always bad hardware.

Could be CPU cooling, CPU power delivery, RAM, power supply, etc.

As others have said it's probably bad HW somewhere, can you run any other video encoders, or any other CPU intensive programs, for any length of time?

Yeah, so that's the thing, I can pound my CPU/Hardware in other things (Heaven Benchmark, CPUID, MemTest etc) for well over an hour with no issues. It's literally just my Handbrake jobs after 15-20 minutes.

However, I think in my latest test I think I've found a key. It could be interesting to the developers or it could just be the failing hardware. I ran the same exact job that failed 100% of the time previously (while using 100% CPU and would pass with 50% or less) and I got it to pass and still use 100% CPU. The only thing I changed was I set the file destination to be a local file on the same PC.

Previously my handbrake jobs were set with the destination being a networked drive on my Plex server. So it seems NIC related, though it's weird if I throttle the CPU then job finishes (networked and all) just fine. I just updated my NIC drivers and I am trying the failing version of the transcode right now (same settings but networked destination instead of local). But it looks like I should just not set the destination to a networked location and just transfer the file when it's done.

Is there anything in the Windows log?

Nothing in the windows logs beyond the critical event that the previous system shutdown was unexpected.

I can confirm that even with the updated NIC drivers that transcoding with a networked drive as the destination still crashes the system, whereas the same exact job to a local file seemed to process just fine.

I suppose for now I'll have to assume it's a NIC hardware failure (despite the NIC operating normally in all other functions) or the faster transcode rate is hitting some weird corner case when actively sending that data over the network that's causing something to bomb out, the duration to failure does seem inconsistent.

I can reliably reproduce the issue if I am missing any other logs or tools of interest to try and catch the failure, but for now setting the networked drive as the destination was merely a luxury and by no means necessary so I'll move to just transcode the file to a local destination in the meantime and copy it when it's done.

Core Temp doesn't log, but some others do. At least, the version I have from 4 years ago doesn't log.

I do remember a note on another site that said some early Ryzen chips would trip up on certain code sequences, and AMD had a fix for it. But that was right after the chips started shipping.

NIC failures "should not" cause reboots. I put that in quotes because it is only mostly true, but the times I've seen it the NIC just happened to be where the error showed up - the actual problem was in other motherboard hardware. And I have never seen handbrake run fast enough to strain the NIC hardware. :)

Just to add more info to this thread. I am seeing the same crash with Handbrake even writing to a local disk. I have tried restricting the cores but have not tried running with the affinity settings. I really don't think this is a faulty hardware issue. More likely some incompatibility with the nuances of the Ryzen architecture. I have run lots of stress tests and played a few high end games with no problem. Temperature is not an issue as the liquid cooling system keeps the CPU at under 59C. This was tracked with both Ryzen Master and CAM.

Full log posted below for one on the encoding that crashed.

I was able to successfully encode a video by disabling all but 2 cores. It was, of course, much slower but it did complete. Previously I had disabled on 4 of 8 cores.

Re: PC Crashes after about 15 minutes into conversion

Post by fonech4rger »

Same issue. Also using a Ryzen 1800. Also liquid-cooled with temps below 65C under long-term full load. RAM passed Memtest 100% @2hrs.
Latest BIOS.

I can encode OK some of the time but can see either HB crashing or the PC being reset at 15-30 mins into an encode.
I queued & encoded 2x40 min files yesterday perfectly, then later tried a different longer file & HB crashed. (log below)
I have noticed HB can be mentioned ref bad memory access errors. (e.g. below)
I have found nvidia gfx drivers since 388.43 create far more reboots, swapping the drivers versions around gave me 100% OK encodes for a while but then some updates happened & HB crashes came back.
The nvda drivers also affect USB device recognition & I wonder if that could have a knock-on effect.

KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE (139)
A kernel component has corrupted a critical data structure. The corruption
could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this machine.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000003, A LIST_ENTRY has been corrupted (i.e. double remove).
Arg2: ffff898171af5800, Address of the trap frame for the exception that caused the bugcheck
Arg3: ffff898171af5758, Address of the exception record for the exception that caused the bugcheck
Arg4: 0000000000000000, Reserved

Re: PC Crashes after about 15 minutes into conversion

Post by FrontierDK »

The problem with liquid qooling is, that while the CPU and/or GPU is cooled quite OK, the surrounding devices aren't. I don't know your motherboard, but I'm guessing that just next to your CPU...you'll find cooling for your CPU's power supply.

When encoding video, you have a 100% CPU load over a longer amount of time, and this will put the power supply to it's max. The motherboard vendor is probably hoping that you will install the default stock cooler for your CPU - thus creating an air flow around your CPU.

So...if not for any other reason than troubleshooting, temporarily replace your water-cooling with a plain ol' stock CPU cooler and see what happens? :D
