Re: Should I leave interlace detection as " Default or None" when encoding my blu rays?

Post by JohnAStebbins »

Not many bluray titles are interlaced. The sample you chose to provide a log for is not interlaced for example. You can see this in the log results for the comb detect filter

Code: Select all

[09:57:53] comb detect: heavy 0 | light 9 | uncombed 663 | total 672
It only detected a light amount of combing in 9 frames. These were probably the result of image detail that isn't really combing but triggered the filter.

So in this case you could disable both comb detection and decomb filters. But if you disabled only comb detect and left decomb enabled, HandBrake would have applied the decomb filter to every frame instead of just the 9 that it detected light combing in. The decomb filter degrades quality when the frames are not interlaced. So you generally want both enabled if you *think* your source is interlaced or both disabled if the *know* your source is not interlaced. If in doubt, leave them both enabled.

Thanks for the reply John, So its better to just leave them as "default" instead of manually setting them each time?

e.g Deinterlace = Decomb - Preset = Default - Interlace Detection = Default

"Default" will take time to try to deinterlace. Use "None" unless you have a disk that does have interlacing, as it will save 5-10% of the encode time.

ok, ill use " none " thanks for the reply. I think I just got confused thinking that if I have Decomb enabled Im forced to use interlace detection. Compared too a early versions of handbrake .

You don't need Decomb enabled at all for most Blu-rays (at least when encoding the main feature). The number of BD discs with interlaced content is very low. You'll probably want it enabled for special features (especially, but not only, if they're standard definition) though.

Thanks for the reply Rodeo, So how would I determine whether I need decomb on for a blu ray that requires it?

If you watch the log window, there will be a message about "source is interlaced, you should do something about that".

I have only seen interlaced BDs from a couple of publishers. One is NISAmerica, specializing in anime. And even their content is mostly progressive, rather than interlaced. In their case, the interlaced titles have 29.97 as the frame rate, rather than 23.97.

When you rip to disk first, you can use a program like VLC to view the intermediate files to determine audio and video characteristics, prior to processing in handbrake. VLC's "Information" screen will tell you if the video is interlaced or progressive.

Thanks for the reply Woodstock, So just to confirm do I look at the video frame rate via VLC?
29.97 = interlaced
23.97 = progressive

That's just a generalization. You can have 23.97 interlaced, but it is unlikely.
