Vertical Boxes Flickering on Screen

Post by apmkk »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:
I have suddenly started having issues with encoding new video from DVD. These boxes (as seen in the image below) flicker all over the screen throughout the entire video playback. I have tried all sorts of things:
  • I have reinstalled and updated NVIDIA drivers for the graphics card
  • I have reinstalled/updated Handbrake
  • I have tried playback of the video on the default Windows video app and VLC, same issue is occurring on both
  • I have tried encoding to h.264 and to mp4, same thing
Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.
Handbrake 1.0.7 64-bit; Windows 10; GTX 550ti; dual monitor (problem appears on both monitors)

If there was any exception or error displayed, please copy it and paste it here:

Try ripping with makemkv first.

Ok, I've spent some more time on this now. Using makemkv first produces a video without any artifacts, but upon conversion of that same file using h.264 in Handbrake, it creates the artifacts again. I can get video created with only Handbrake using MPEG-4, VP8 and VP9 without the artifacts as well. All signs seem to point to something strange with the conversion using only h.264. Any idea why? Is there a decoder/encoder on my computer that needs reinstalling or fixing? Or don't those come from Handbrake itself?

Well this clearly shows HandBrake's video decoder is working fine. It could be an issue with the H.264 encoder, but it's a very mature, heavily-used H.264 encoder so it's indeed more likely to be the H.264 decoder during playback. What are you using to play the video?

I'd suggest trying to disable hardware-accelerated video decoding in VLC (IIRC you need to save the settings as VLC doesn't autosave, but I could be wrong), relaunching VLC (probably unnecessary but it can't hurt) and trying to play the file again; I can't remember where to disable said hardware-accelerated decoding but hopefully someone else here does :)

Playback of the video on VLC, windows 10 default movies & tv app, and windows media player all show the video with artifacts. Other older videos I have that appear to be encoded as h264/mpeg4 according to VLC also play back without artifacts. It seems to only occur with newly ripped videos, which is why I was leaning towards a problem with handbrake.

And as I see you added another post... it looks like I already had hardware-acceleration disabled in VLC. I tried changing that setting to every possible combination and it appears no luck.

I also just tried encoding an old, unaffected video using OpenShot to h264 and it produced the artifacts. Is there a way that the encoder could get corrupted in the OS? Or am I making things up? I usually consider myself pretty tech savvy, but this has got me beat. :)

Code: Select all

GPU Information:
GPU Information is unavailable
That might have something to do with your problem: invalid video drivers

Uninstall ALL your existing drivers, and let Windows Update automatically install Hardware Quality Lab drivers for what it thinks your GPU is. This could very well disable your dual monitor configuration, but you need to test it.

Then load up HB and it should report something for GPU when it creates the startup log (you don't need to encode anything).

If Windows can't autodetect your Fermi-based GTX550Ti, then it's either defective or is an asian counterfeit.

So, if W10's own drivers work, then try the latest WHQL Geforce drivers that support the 550Ti from nVidia, such as these: https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/120486

Just so you know, see how 550Ti support is mysteriously absent from this later package? https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/123219

Still seem to be having the problem.

I went ahead and uninstalled the drivers for the 550ti and let windows automatically download and find them (it used driver version 376.53). It did and correctly detected the graphics card as what it is according to the HB log:

Code: Select all

GPU Information:
  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti - 21.21.13.7653
Screen: 1440x900
I decided to then boot into safe mode and again had the same trouble with encoding video. I also went ahead and tried a system restore to sometime last week. I'm probably going to just do a fresh windows install when I get a bit more time.

Ok, so it seems we're back to normal now. Sheesh...

I attempted several other things before getting it back. I tried using HB on linux, and had the problem. I reinstalled Windows (there were some other weird issues happening and it was time anyway) and it persisted. I replaced my graphics card and that solved another, seemingly unrelated issue with YouTube videos playing with the VP9 codec. And then I finally realized that Plex on my PS3 was showing the same problems with playback, but I was not having the same problem on my server computer. I could have sworn this was not the case before, but, whatever. I went into settings on the PS3 Plex and adjusted the maximum h.264 level to the highest number and adjusted the remote playback to original quality and ta-dah! It played back correctly.

I went back to HB, determined to play with the encoder level settings and tried each one from 5.2 down until (I think 3.2) it encoded the video without any problems. Then, and I can't explain this, I went back up the scale and the problem never reoccurred. So, unless anyone has an explanation for this, I'm just going to hope it doesn't come back.
