Hello everybody.
I just got an i7 7700K 4x4.2 GHz CPU with 16 GB 3200 MHz RAM.
As I transcode a 2160p h.265 65 Mbps video (10 bit color) to 30 Mbps in average bitrate mode I get 6 fps in first pass (turbo mode off as it shows no boost) and 5 fps in second pass.
Is that an usual speed? I found that unbelievable slow.
I'm using Handbrake 1.0.7 x64 and Windows 10 x64.
I tried the test version of [Removed Dubious Product Reference] hd converter deluxe which supports the hardware encoding of my GPU (GTX1080), aware of the quality loss, but also got there only 14 fps max with the standard profile.
4k transcode at 6 fps?

Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
Pretty much. Encoding to H.265 is much slower than H.264, and 4K just adds to the workload.
Last I checked, the H.265 encoder on nvidia cards is still pretty new. It doesn't support B-Frames yet so compression / quality is probably going to suffer quite a bit.

Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
Pick faster settings if you want faster encoding.
Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
I thought of 40 fps.
Here a log. As you can see this movie took 16 1/2 h.

Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
Try a nightly build as the version of x265 should be newer.
A CQ encode will probably save you space if that's what you want.

Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
Thanks for the hint.
My concern is mainly to suit my new uhd tv which only is able to play streams with around 30 Mbps without interruption. I found it difficult to guess the final size of a file in constant quality mode.
Edit: Could you recommend a quality setting for cq mode that is around 30 Mbps for uhd h.265 videos?

Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
Given the source file and time to run tests, it would be possible to recommend specific RF settings. Without those, such recommendations would be guesses.
Bit rate goes up with the complexity of the video. A typical animated feature can get by with a low bit rate without losing much quality. A fast-moving high-detail video game will use a much higher bit rate. Most movies fall somewhere in between, and your perception of what is "good enough" is uniquely yours. Some of us grew up with SD video and were fine with that; Some of us are pixel counters who can't stand when shadows are "blocky".
You do know that you can encode shorter sections with different settings to find what's "right"? Pick a section of the movie with a lot of detail/action, and encode 30 seconds with different RF settings. Which ones keep the bit rate under your limit, while looking acceptable?

Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
If your problem is capping bitrates below 30Mbps then maybe x265 has buffers to help.
Does x265 have vbv buffers?
Does x265 have vbv buffers?
Re: 4k transcode at 6 fps?
x265 has vbv-buffer and vbv-maxrate same as x264.
