Not sure how to set Picture for Apollo 13

Can someone please help me know how to set Handbrake so that Apollo 13 will have the right picture settings. The picture comes out tall and skinny with black bars on the sides instead of stretching it to fill left and right. I'm not sure what I need to do to fix this.

I'm running Handbrake 1.0.7 on Windows 10

Which preset did you use? Did you make changes to the preset?

It looks like you have auto crop enabled, but anamorphic set to None.

Anamorphic was set to Automatic and Cropping was set to Automatic

Can you provide a scan log for the disc too? When you insert the disc and open it in HandBrake, without encoding it, there will be a scan log instead of the encode log.

The title you're encoding is "fullscreen" 4:3, but unless it's a really old DVD, there should be another title or angle with a widescreen version on it, which the scan log would confirm.

I will have to get back to you guys when I have more time. I can tell you I have a professionally edited version that purchased back when the movie first came out. I will get you a scan log when I have time.

Ok..here is the scan log for the dvd. When I put the dvd in my dvd player it is widescreen ratio on my tv and looks normal.

I ripped the dvd with makemkv and then used Handbrake to create a file to play on my Roku (using Plex). But even before I use Handbrake the file is not expanding left to right to be the right width. I had this problem with another dvd once but I can't remember what settings I had to change on Handbrake to get it to make it the right aspect ratio and stretch left to right.

I know very little about this (I'm sure that's obvious) and would sure appreciate some instructions on how to set Handbrake for this particular dvd. TY!

…and I hadn't even noticed the source was an MKV file in the first post. Yeah, it looks like MakeMKV may be honoring the bitstream's aspect ratio (which is seemingly incorrect) and causing the results you're seeing.

You could try encoding directly in HandBrake, since it appears the disc is already decrypted.

Ok...I'm not sure how to use Handbrake to do that? Do you mean use the dvd in the computer as the source and do it directly from the disc?

Well, you were able to scan the DVD with HandBrake (as per your log above), surely you'll figure out how to encode it ;)

You can still scan an encrypted DVD with handbrake, even if you don't have the third party libraries for decryption. The encode won't go so well, though. :)

From what I understand of MakeMKV's operation, the two places the aspect ratio information is stored on disk (one being the video bitstream itself) will be copied to the MKV file unchanged. If they don't agree, as they appear to on this disk, there is room for confusion on the part of the player. Some people have had to use tools like mkvtoolnix to edit the MKV header to put the correct aspect ratio in, because their players used the header info instead of the bitstream info.

For me, handbrake has usually found the correct one to use, with that usually being the video bitstream. Not sure why it wouldn't for this MKV file would confuse it, though.
