h265 encoding changes in 1.0.7

Post by tophertronic »

I have been busy encoding my DVDs to mkv using the h265 576p25 matroska preset.
Had no problems with the previous version (1.0.3?) but since upgrading to 1.0.7 the encoded files are almost twice the size.

I don't have any logs of the encoding in version 1.0.3, it looks like they were removed during the upgrade.
I can post a log of 1.0.7 though if needed.

However, I tested it with a file that I have previously encoded.
The first was done using the same preset in 1.0.3 and came to 403MB (it was s01e02 of The X-Files if you must know).
Then when I encoded the same episode in 1.0.7 the file size is 792MB.

So, what's the deal. What's changed between 1.0.3 and 1.0.7 for this difference in encoding size.
Could anything on my computer be causing the change? I haven't made any unusual changes since each encode, only the usual windows patches...

Please post a log for the 1.0.7 encode. Most likely you are not using the same settings. Unfortunately we probably won't be able to say for sure without 1.0.3 logs

hey, thanks for replying.

log for 1.0.7 is below, but I'm not expecting you to figure out for sure without a log file from an older rip.
I can find a 1.0.2 download, not a 1.0.3, maybe I'll try that though and see if there's definitely a difference.

I am using the pre configured presets, and I didn't make any changes to the preset in the older version, I just used it as-is. So if the problem is the settings, then that's because they've changed in the 1.0.7 install, surely...?

Looks like your source has a lot of timestamp errors.

Don't think I had that before.

Could the time stamp errors be causing it to be a large file size?
And don't know why there's a libdvdread error, I had the issue of handbrake my being able to read the DVD initially but installed vlc and pointed it to there and it reads them fine.

What else do you recommend?

Thanks

The timestamp issues are just a symptom of the DVD being protected. HandBrake doesn't work with copy protected discs, but some other softwares like MakeMKV do.

I use makemkv for blurays, would you recommend using it for dvds as well if they're protected then?
