Handbrake fully crashes computer about half way through encode

Post by Code-E »

I use Handbrake to lower the filesize of my YouTube videos, I recently got a new desktop, but now everytime I encode, about half way through my computer completely locks up. I've left it for several hours and it never unlocks. So I have to hard reset it.
It's not 100% consistent with where it locks up. Sometimes it's 19% through, sometimes its 75%

I'm using 1.0.7 on Win 10 64bit

At first an error appeared when only Handbrake crashed, but that hasn't happened in a few days. I'm not entirely sure what the error would say though.

Also I did delete the folders in Roaming, and fully reinstalled. But that didn't help.

Truncated encodes are often (usually?) the result of heat.

Clean your CPU and system cooling system. Check for dead fans.

Hopefully it isn't dead fans. I've only had this computer for a couple weeks now. So it's also very clean and unobstructed.
Is there anything else it could be or that I should look for?

I would install one of the many CPU temperature tools and monitor your system temp. Handbrake WILL run your CPU at 100% capability, with 8 or fewer cores, and you must have adequate cooling to keep the CPU from overheating.

Motherboards SHOULD back the clock speed down to protect the CPU if it gets over about 80C, rather than letting things crash. With proper cooling, 65C should be the maximum you see on that processor, if the hot air can escape the case. I turn on an extra case fan when I do continuous encodes on my AMD machine, and it lowers the CPU temp from 63C to 58C (sometimes more). But my CPU cooler isn't the stock AMD.

So I should probably get more case fans? As well as upgrade from the stock CPU cooler?

I'm currently about 30% through an encode and hovering around 57-60C.

I just worry about my video card because I moved a fan from the front bottom, near the video card, to the top next to the CPU.

Needed to force restart my computer on the second encode. The temp froze at 61C

EDIT: That 61C was according to Speccy, the Asus program I just installed seems to have a very different idea of CPU temp.
After doing a test with that program it seems the CPU goes up to 70C, which is when I cancelled the encode.
Would a fix for this be more fans?

57-60C is not a big deal for an AMD processor. The BIOS on my machine doesn't begin clock speed limiting until 75C, although that can be adjusted up or down.

A quick google check came up with this page, which lists what stock coolers do in free air, for Intel and AMD processors:

http://www.buildcomputers.net/cpu-temperature.html

These are "acceptable" temps to the manufacturer, or they'd have provided a better cooler, but meeting them requires getting the hot air out of the case quickly. You'll notice that 70-75C is not unusual. But the ambient temp has a big effect.

You can try limiting the temps a bit by telling Windows to only allow handbrake to use, say, 4 of the processor cores. This will, of course, slow the encode, but it will also limit temps. If the encode completes with the smaller core count (and lower temperature), then cooling would be your priority.

Also verify that the cooling on your video board is working. While handbrake isn't using it, if the temps in the case get high enough to be a problem, it could cause that board to crash the system. Rare, but possible. I've had chips on the motherboard become temperature sensitive enough to crash the system under heavy load.

I forgot to edit that post. The 57-60C was taken from Speccy, which I've discovered isn't accurate. It was likely in the high 70s (maybe low 80s) because Speccy seems to show about 20C lower than actual temps. Which would probably be why the computer crashes.

The video card seems to hover around 50C while idle.

How can I tell Windows to allow Handbrake to use less cores? I don't think I've ever had to do something like that.

Thanks for the link. It seems I'm going to be learning a lot about cooling and probably getting some new fans.

A google search for "setting affinity in windows 10" comes up with a variety of explanations, I'll let you pick the one that works best for you. Short version: Once the process starts, the task manager can change which CPU cores are allowed to work on that task. I haven't played with it, but I think you can set the affinity on the GUI, and that will affect the encode when it starts. Someone may correct me on this.

I use "Core Temp", which can tell me what speed each core is running at, percentage of that speed being used, and the individual core temps. Or it can be told to only show me the overall temp. It also has some other options I've never explored.... I just wanted the temps. :)
