Shaky/Jerky Encode...Why???

Post by woodr2011 »

Hi everyone,

I am having a difficult time encoding the DVD of Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. The primary issue is evidently something to do with the frame rate. When using the same settings as the Roku 480 preset, HB sets the frame rate to 23, resulting in VERY shaky/choppy output--particularly during pan&scan scenes. When I raise the frame rate to 29, it resolves somewhat but I would like to have someone's input. The issue is particularly noticeable during chapter 5 as the camera pans up the tree that has supposedly appeared in the cellar hole of Rustin Parr's house. I also notice an unusually long pause at the end of the encode before it shows as being 100% finished. My log file is below. Many thanks for any help!

It's hard to tell what frame rates are used on downloaded content. Each torrent creator could do a variety of things to make it hard to process.

Have you tried it with the original disk?

Hi - I don't torrent. I own the original disc. I tried encoding directly from the disc in HB and noticed the shaky/jerky issue and then I CC'd the entire disc to my hard drive with Pavtube and tried encoding it again through HB (still the same problem).

On a NTSC DVD, the frame rate is normally set at 29.97 fps. If the original film was nominally 24fps, the ability to bring it BACK to 24fps depends on how the disk was mastered. This may explain the jerkiness:
[16:55:41] comb detect: heavy 29537 | light 5285 | uncombed 115765 | total 150587
[16:55:41] decomb: deinterlaced 29537 | blended 5285 | unfiltered 115765 | total 150587
[16:55:41] vfr: 162219 frames output, 0 dropped and 11632 duped for CFR/PFR
The duplicate frames will make it look like the panning paused, then moved on.

What is below may not be the correct setting - it's from my vague recollection of other messages similar to yours, but it isn't part of my work flow, so I having committed it to "real" memory. And I'm sure someone who knows better will correct me if it's wrong:

Choosing "BOB" for the deinterlace method, rather than decomb, may help with this. It is slower than decomb, which is probably why it isn't the default.

Many thanks for the suggestion! I will give it a go and reply with the results. :D

Hi Woodstock - The "Bob" setting appears as a preset under the Decomb filter, so I tried encoding the disc with that setting enabled. Unfortunately, it did not help the issue. HB still throws the frame rate back to 23. There is another preset under Decomb called "EEDI2Bob." Is this possibly the optimal setting? Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate encodes this disc successfully (without any jitter) with auto presets resulting in a frame rate of 29, so it seems there is something unique to this disc (perhaps the DRM?) that confuses HB when it comes time to assign the optimal frame rate. Setting a manual frame rate of 29.97 helps the issue somewhat but it still has a noticeable choppiness during panned scenes as I mentioned in the original post. Pavtube is a very dependable encoder, but it lacks the ability to recognize and name/re-name chapters, which is one of my priorities when ripping movies from my collection. I have never found a paid DVD ripper application that combines Pavtube's stability with HB's ability to handle chapter re-naming. Are you aware of anything?

I won't comment on Pavtube either way, because I don't want to get in the middle of that intellectual property fight.

What I'm remembering is that one of the deinterlace filters essentially doubles the frame rate, so that the transitional frames (where half the interlaced frame is the "old" position, and the other half is the "new" position) become two frames. Some detail is lost, but you still end up with the same number of "scans" of the image.

Again, this is not something I do in my workflow, so I didn't commit the terms or settings to active memory, so I can't be more detailed than this. It only works with interlaced video, and since I mainly buy Bluray now, interlacing is rare.

I think the real problem here is you picked constant 29.97 framerate with content that is not. Why would you pick that?

Hi - That's a very reasonable question. The answer is that choosing constant FR / same as source resulted in the jerkiness I described along with audio sync issues. I did a rip earlier today with Yadif/Bob/Fast enabled in the Deinterlace filter and 29.97 variable FR, and the encode looks flawless. This issue appears seemingly at random with some DVDs. I was advised early on in my experience with HB that one should NEVER use variable FR because it would actually result in the jerkiness issue; however, it seems that it is the cure for it when choosing constant FR has caused the problem. Do you recommend variable FR as a rule? I'm still learning HB, so I would appreciate your thoughts.

Can you show us a screenshot of the filters tab? Sounds like it might be a Windows GUI bug somehow, same as source CFR should have selected 23.976 fps for you.

You must have misunderstood since that is the opposite of reality.

Variable framerate is what you want unless you have some broken/decrepit post-Handbrake environment that doesn't support VFR.

This is the video in which that advice is given. I'm neither endorsing nor condemning it. I merely stated that this is how I was advised early on in my experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIr25ky ... 6715815909

Pretty much every tutorial for HB on the web, whether video on Youtube or not, is full of bad info and suggestions. Idiots with no understanding love to churn out crap content.

Unquestionably true. I will say that I ran an encode of the same disc with the Roku 480 preset (which includes either a peak or variable frame rate setting), and it reverted back to the jerky pan and scan issue that I mentioned originally. Could you possibly recommend a video tutorial to me that addresses this issue? I would appreciate your thoughts as I reserve no doubt that your understanding of this matter is trustworthy.

Post the encoding log for your variable framerate encode you say is jerky.

Rodeo wrote: Wed May 03, 2017 1:50 pm Can you show us a screenshot of the filters tab? Sounds like it might be a Windows GUI bug somehow, same as source CFR should have selected 23.976 fps for you.
Hi Rodeo - I apologize for not replying sooner. The site won't allow me to attach a screenshot.

You could use a site like imgur and post the link :)

Code: Select all

[17:27:15] + filters
[17:27:15] + Comb Detect (mode=0:spatial-metric=2:motion-thresh=2:spatial-thresh=3:filter-mode=1:block-thresh=80:block-width=16:block-height=16)
[17:27:15] + avfilter (yadif='mode=1:auto=1')
[17:27:15] + yadif: mode=1, auto=1
[…]
[17:55:09] comb detect: heavy 45727 | light 8810 | uncombed 42702 | total 97239
That could be the cause of the jerkiness. It looks like you used Deinterlace Bob, which would be a touch faster than Decomb Bob (because the former uses some assembly optimizations not available in the latter), but I've occasionally encountered issues with avfilter's yadif, so maybe trying the same encode with Decomb Bob would yield smoother results.

Hi Rodeo - I actually had the same jerkiness when trying the encode with Decomb/Bob as well, I'm sorry to say. What are your thoughts on the frame rate issue? I have heard advocates in favor of constant and those in favor of variable.

Here is the imgur link to the screen shot of my filters tab: http://imgur.com/a/aNusV

Oh I guess I should have asked for picture, not filters. And for the source corresponding to your first log please (E:\Users\Ryan\Downloads\BLAIR_WITCH_2).

The settings I used for that encode should be visible in the log text (above).

Yes, they should -- but I suspect a bug somewhere that won't be evident in the log.

So if I'm understanding correctly, you are asking for a screenshot of the filter tab for the Blair Witch 2 encode? I'm just a bit confused by the statement, "pictures, not filters."

Nah, there's a picture tab next to the filters tab. But I'm seemingly really unfamiliar with the Windows GUI, since the information I'm looking for is actually found on the video tab
