Handbrake influences GPU Clock

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:
Problem 1: With MSI Afterburner running, Handbranke won't start.
Problem 2: When Handbrake starts, it puts my GPU (GTX 1080 ti) out of its sleep state and into max base clock (around 1.6 GHz). The encoding is still executed on the CPU which shows 100% load, while the GPU shows 0% load but for some reason it jumps to its max base clock when Handbrake is running (just the main window, not even encoding in process). In this idle, but high frequency state, the graphics card uses 60 W instead of 10 W.

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.
- Handbrake version 1.07
- Windows 10, Version 1703 (Build 15063.138)
- i7 7700K, 16 GB memory, GTX 1080 ti
- Omen X 35, G-Sync enabled in Full Screen Applications only

Since Handbrake is not starting when Afterburner is running, and the fact that Handbrake causes the graphics card to go from its idle state to its max base clock (without putting any actual load on the GPU), I think that Handbrake is somehow trying to do stuff to my GPU. As soon as I close Handbrake, the GPU returns to its normal idle clock of 150 MHz.

I used to run Handbranke on a Windows 7 computer and never observed this behaviour. Handbrake always started with Afterburner running in the background, and it did not influence the GPU clock in any way (the GPU stayed at its lowest possible clock speed during encodings).

Are you using GPU accelerated decoding?

If only you posted the REQUIRED encoding log so we can see what you're actually doing...

Added encoding log in original post. It's a fresh install of Handbrake with the default settings. The GPU is at 0% load, its clock is just going up to max whenever Handbrake is running. It's not actually being used for anything:

Does the act of just opening HandBrake cause the GPU to scale up? Or do you need to scan or encode first?


The Msi afterburner / rivatuner is a driver / OS Bug introduced after creators update. Not something we have control over.

Just opening Handbrake is enough. As soon as the main window appears, the gpu and vram clocks jump to max values, but the activity on the gpu is 0%.

I can work around the other issue, disabling Afterburner/Rivatuner lets me open Handbrake. So that's sort of alright. But having the GPU sit at max clock for the whole encoding process without actually doing anything seems kind of a waste to me.

If the activity is 0% then its not doing or wasting anything apart from some minimal power draw.

60W is quite substantial at idle.

Also, I just checked. It appears to be a Nvidia Driver issue as well. Both AMD and Intel clock shift correctly. The HandBrake GUI uses WPF which is GPU rendered, so that may trigger it to increase but we have no control over that.

So, I'm afraid the answer to both of your problems is down to Drivers/OS problems.

I found the culprit:

Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings -> Power Management Mode

This was set to "maximum performance" which caused the GPU to randomly leave its idle state, even in Windows with nothing going on.

Now I set it to "optimal power", and the GPU stays at its lowest clock speed, even when Handbrake is running.

Apparently just having Handbrake open was enough for the driver to put the GPU in almost full gear with "maximum performance" power management. Although there was basically no load on the GPU (according to HWiNFO the GPU had 0% load at 1.5 GHz). Now that it's running at a mucher lower frequency, there is actually a fraction of a load being put on the GPU when Handbrake is running (around 3% at 150 MHz). This tiny load probably caused the driver to switch to a much higher frequency, but then of course the fractional load became so tiny that it was being rounded down to 0%.
