Handbrake with 1080/50p Camcorder Video

Post by Flax »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:

Hi,
i use Handbrake since a while and i love it for DVDs and Blurays.
Since i own a Panasonic HC-V757 Camcorder i whant to shrink my Videos from this device as well.
I record them in 1080/50p to ensure best quality for editing.
Most of the videos are homevideos from the famaly.
Those i mostly just whanna shrink and store them on my nas.

Just to make it simble i use the same profile as most blurays.

Sadly the output size is much larger then a standard bluray.

bluray = about 2 gb / hour
camcorder = about 5-6 gb / hour

why?

For the settings i use (easy mode) high profile / 4.1 / medium / RF22

ok, bluray has about 24 fps (when encoding i leave it to "same as source".
for camcorder it just doesnt make any differnce (about 100mb) if set to "same as source" or constant 25fps (pal).

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.

why?
Different sources. More motion/less motion. More grain/no grain. Etc.
Go encode the bluray of Saving Private Ryan and you'll see a lot more than 2GB/hour.

so its not a bug? cause as i can remind from years ago i could recode my videos with close to equal settings and had some nice quality/diskspace videos.

but ill give it a try with rf24 (hope this doesnt result in to low quality).

No, it's not a bug. Different content needs different bitrates. If you want the same size, quality be damned, use a target bitrate of whatever your blurays average out to.

I'd recommend keeping 50fps instead of dropping to 25fps. Keep increasing RF a couple points at a time until you're happy with the quality and the size.

Also I note you have tune=film. Does the video you shot have a film-grain like appearance that you're trying to preserve? If not, remove the tune.
Also you can disable decomb since it doesn't look like your camcorder is outputting interlaced video. Should give a bit of a speed bump.

It's different content, so anything. More motion in the scene. More shaking of the camera. More detail.
