Question on file sizes

Post by Lardog »

I have a question on file size of encoded movies and how they are determined. I have been using Handbrake for a while now (various versions) and typically use a custom preset, based off the standard preset "Normal". The only adjustment is Constant Quality slider set to 22, rather than the default 20, as recommended for BluRay movies. Most movies come out to between 2-4 GB in size, but occasionally, one will result in a 6GB+ size file.

As an example, a couple of recent movies are;
  • War Dogs. Length - 1:54, File Size - 1.72GB
  • The Big Chill. Length1:45, File Size 5.93GB
None of the settings were changed between the two (as far as I know) and the Big Chill is even 9 minutes shorter. What is it that makes it almost 4GB larger?

I currently have 1.03, but both of these were done on previous version, maybe 1.02.

Re: Question on file sizes

Post by s55 »

Some typical examples of things that cause high variation in filesizes.

Noise / grain in the video. Often used for effect or just an certificate of dark scenes.
High Motion and particular filming styles with usage of camera pans

So, in other words, it's just the nature of the particular movie that results in the file size assuming all other settings are constant? Just seems like a large variance.

Thanks.

Just seems like a large variance.
Not.
100:1 would be considered a large variance; compare a sideshow to ocean waves and you will see exactly what is being pointed out...

Try The Social Network and Saving Private Ryan -- you'll see about a 20:1 difference.

Most anime gives 10:1 or more... all about smooth backgrounds without a lot of detail.

Lardog wrote: Sat Mar 25, 2017 9:34 pmMost movies come out to between 2-4 GB in size, but occasionally, one will result in a 6GB+ size file.
Constant factors produce an encode at the given quality setting using whatever bitrate is required, whether it be large or small. As has already been pointed out, the visual nature of content will produce dramatically different bitrates.

If SIZE is all you care about, then use multi-pass ABR. This produces an encode at (or very close to) the specified bitrate, rather than a specified quality. Of course, with ABR, speed will suffer, and quality may suffer if you've specified too low a bitrate when encoding the more demanding content.

A Constant Factor compromise you might like to experiment with is the use of the NLMeans denoiser built in to HB. Using the Preview function, make a 30sec sample of The Big Chill (which I reckon is gonna be grainy stock), then encode another 30sec sample with NLMeans->Light->HighMotion and compare the bitrates.

If you can't tell the visual difference between the two samples, then you've found your solution. Light NLMeans on a non-noisy source will often not even reach an additional 10% compression, whereas a noisy source will easily be compressed by 30% or more. This will help produce more "consistent" filesizes.

BTW, I'll bet that "22 over 20" "recommended for BluRay" actually means to use that setting's lower quality quantisation to quickly denoise HD spacial frequencies at the expense of all other detail. In all circumstances, NLMeans will produce both better quality and smaller sizes.
