Cannot burn in subtitles to a particular file

I have never had problems burning in subtitles to videos, whether the original files are avi, mp4 or mkv. This one file, Jagten (The Hunt) will not take an srt file. I have tried it using the original avi, output to an mp4, again output to an mkv, again converted to an mp4 output to an mkv, then as an mkv output to an mkv. It never burns in the subtitles! I burn in all my subtitles because my NAS can't transcode on the fly.

I use Handbrake 1.0.2 64bit, running on Windows 10. All other conversions and burns have worked perfectly.

There must be something special about this file that I need to counteract, but I don't know what it is!
