Subtitles getting "squished"

Post by Shibblet »

I recently purchased the Star Wars Anthology (Episode 1-6) on Blu-Ray. I was able to determine which subtitle tracks were needed for the general movie.

However, I noticed that the subtitles aren't as small and so far up on the screen on the original blu-ray. After they were encoded with Handbrake, they are smaller (horizontally anwyay), and further up the screen.

What I think is happening, is that the subtitles are being scaled down to fit the cropped video. In other words, the 1920x1080 area is cropped down to 1920x816, in order to remove the black bars at the top and bottom. Then the subtitles are "scaled" down after the video is cropped from 1920x1080 to 1920x816, instetad of "cropping" the subtitles with the video.

Is there a way to fix this?

Since you didn't provide the log, we don't know if you were using an output container that would allow the BD's PGS subtitles to be passed through to the player...

On the original BD, were the subtitles normally in the black bar (letterbox) area? If so, they do need to be "squished" to fit the cropped video, if they're burned in. You can't just "whack off the top" to make them fit, because sometimes there are subtitles at the top. Pass-through subtitles, though can be scaled by the player, which may put them in the letterbox area that handbrake stripped out.

Heck, we don't even know what version he's using.

Re: Subtitles getting "squished"

Post by s55 »

After they were encoded with Handbrake, they are smaller (horizontally anwyay), and further up the screen.

[09:25:55] * subtitle track 1, English (track 1, id 0x3) Picture [PGS] -> Passthrough, Default
[09:25:55] * subtitle track 2, English (track 0, id 0x2) Picture [PGS] -> Passthrough
They weren't encodede by HandBrake. They were copied from the source. This means it's your player that's scaling them.

That's kind of what I thought. But they are scaled down to fit the size of the video, which is now 1920x816. This happens on any playback device I use. VLC, Chromecast, TV, Blu-Ray player, etc.

The only solution I could find is to burn-in the subtitles. But this doesn't work well with the other sub-track for all of the dialog. You have dialog overtop of dialog at certain times, and it's hard to read.

In my experience, kodi does not squish subtitles like this. Also, if you disable cropping (set to all 0) it usually "fixes" players that squish subtitles, although you would be wasting some space by encoding the black borders.
