Expected Frames

Post by NEO STUDIOS »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:

First time Hand Brake User. Today I downloaded HandBrake10 / 9 / 2016 .

I have multiple video files MOV & MP4 files that were saved on a WD Passport External Drive. Some of these MOV & MP4 files will not upload into ADOBE Premiere Pro completely. Nor am I able to save directly / transfer these corrupted(???) video files to my Windows Hard Drive. I have tried to process / fix / re-save these corrupted video files through Hand Brake on to my Windows Hard Drive.

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.
Using the most recent version of Hand Brake in a Win 8 OS

If there was any exception or error displayed, please copy it and paste it here:
Below I pasted the Log File. What I see is that Hand Brake will create a partial new file. When Hand Brake reaches the part of the video file that is bad (???) it stops the encoding and then saves an incomplete video.

Example, below the original file is 1:40 long.
As the Hand Brake log states below:
[16:56:05] sync: got 1230 frames, 3022 expected

The result is the new file encoded the first 41 seconds of a 1:40 file.

Thoughts, suggestions? Thank you for your consideration.

Unfortunately it sounds like your source files are broken.

Can Handbrake fix or override the problem to create a repaired video file?

Handbrake can't - that's why it gave up at 1230 frames into the video.

Whether or not another tool could fix them depends on what the actual errors are, and handbrake's logs are not that detailed. It could be that "something" inserted a block of zeros to make up for a bad sector on the source.

You say you couldn't copy the files onto your internal hard drive, to me that sounds as if there's something wrong with your external drive. Sounds like bad sectors causing read errors. What you need is to use a data recovery tool of some sort to get a copy of those video files off that external drive, there might be some corruption in the copied files but at least you'll have preserved as much as you can for now. I've used the free version of Recuva a few times to 'undelete' files, another feature it touts is supposedly being able to copy data off of damaged disks and while I don't know how effective it is at that task it's at least a starting point. Maybe someone else here has more experience and/or knows of better software to try.

Once you have copies of the videos on more reliable media then you might try running them through VideoReDo's 'QuickStream fix' function. Presumably parts of the copied files will be damaged because of unrecoverable read errors, QuickStream Fix will basically takes those video files and output copies with all the damaged parts sanitized as best as possible so editing and playback software won't throw a fit when it gets to one of the damaged parts (although you'll still have visible corruption apparent at those bad parts). VideoReDo isn't cheap, but there is a free trial period that should be more then enough time to process a handful of files.
