4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

Post by StPatty33 »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:
Hello, all! Here is some relevant info to the problem I'm having:
-I've been using handbrake for about 5 years now, but just recently started including subtitles in my library.
-Until a couple days ago, I'd always used .mp4 container for the widest compatibility
-Until a couple days ago, I'd been using h.264 for all of my encoding
-I recently discovered the major benefits of h.265 and have decided to start using that for 90% of my encodes going forward
-Because h.265 through Plex will require on-the-fly transcoding anyway for most devices currently, I've decided to take the compatibility hit and switch to .mkv containers going forward, mostly for the ability to passthrough DTS 5.1 rather than needing to encode DTS into AC3
-Most of my personal library are Blu-ray sources, which of course have image-based subtitles
-.mp4 cannot contain PGS subs, so I'd been using OCR to create .srt files, which is time-consuming and less-than-accurate much of the time.
-In switching to .mkv, I've discovered how easy it is to include subs through Handbrake now, simply including the file rather than OCR->.srt
So here's the issue I'm running into given all that info above:
When I encode, for example, a 4:3 video from a blu-ray source, naturally I allow Handbrake to crop off the black bars on the sides. It appears, however, that when the video crops off the sides, it smashes the PGS subs horizontally, making them hard to read--which defeats the purpose of subs. I've tested this out by doing a snippet of video both with the cropping of the black space, and without said cropping. W/no cropping, the subs look fine, when cropped, they are smashed. Please help me figure out how to remedy this!

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.
-Windows 10 Pro 64bit
-Handbrake 0.10.3.0
-Other info included in log files

If there was any exception or error displayed, please copy it and paste it here:
-None

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance. I've literally JUST started using PGS, so I expect that when transcoding a widescreen (wider than 16:9) source, that the subs would then be smushed vertically, just as these are being smushed horizontally. Help me stop the smushing!

Here are visual examples of what it's doing:

The old version you're using isn't supported, please upgrade to the current release or the nightly.

Are the subs you've screenshotted forced subs that were burned in the video by HB, or the PGS track being rendered by your choice of playback software?

They are screens of the PGS track played back through VLC (not burned in). They do the same thing when run through Plex to my Apple TV as well.

I think that makes it a problem with your choice of playback software, not a HB problem.

? And what playback software do you suggest? Media Player and the Windows "Movie" player neither one recognize the PGS subtitle (which is irrelevant anyway, as the end-result I'm looking for is playability through Plex). When both players on my PC that are able to play back a file w/a PGS subtitle have the same issue, then I would argue it's an issue with the encoding, not the playback.

Can you try this in the nightly build?

There is a change in how the subtitles are handled in the NB versions, from what I have read here. In the release version, the subtitles are simply passed through, and the player has responsibility for scaling to fit. However, the NB scales the graphic image in the subtitle track, at least for when it burns them in. Not sure if it does it for pass-through.

Although, that would not be "passing through", would it?

I'll give it a shot, Woodstock--thanks for helping.

I did just try a video w/20 pixels of black on top and bottom (none on sides) and it does in fact squish the subs vertically when cropped that way, as well--so it's not just a horizontal issue.

Just tried it with today's nightly, and it still distorts the subs. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I understand that it's the player that's doing the smashing, but if we're telling Handbrake to trim the video, should it not be able to tell the subtitles to be trimmed (not re-sized) as well? It essentially means that the only file that will play correctly with a PGS subtitle from HB is one where the original video aspect is completely untouched. That is an extremely rare video indeed--almost all videos need 20 px or 140 px off the top and bottom, or 200+ px off the sides. Saying it's the player's fault is essentially saying HB does not support PGS unless it's 100% burned in.

The problem is if you trim the subtitles you risk chopping off important text.

OK, so, since I'm using .mkv now, I can take advantage of the container's flexibility by using mkvtools. Here's what I just tried:
Run a short video w/the cropping and messed up subs
Run the identical video only w/out cropping and subs that play accurately

Placed both files into mkvtools, keeping all files from the cropped video except the sub, and then deselecting all files from the uncropped video except the sub. Muxed them together into a new file. The result?

Smashed subs.

So it's not that Handbrake is doing something incorrectly necessarily, it's that it's passing the sub through untouched rather than applying a crop to the PGS that matches the video crop.

Theoretically that's a possibility, though I don't think I've ever seen a sub extend past the original video size. If the video was meant to be viewed on a 4:3 screen, for example, then the subs would generally be arranged in such a way that they're meant to be viewed on that screen size as well.

Getting this to work right could make such a huge difference. If it works, then subs attached to the file will take an extra 2 to 3 seconds of selecting them in HB and be 100% accurate. Without it working right, for each video it means 5 - 15 minutes of demuxing to extract the file, 10 minutes of running an OCR on it and manually reviewing it, which results in poorly detected italics and bad guesses (No "PICARD: " isn't "HEARD." ", stupid OCR!). OR, pulling an off-sync, advertising-filled .srt file off the net, which will take at least 10 minutes of work to match up and edit, and even then it may be for a slightly different version of the video and not be right in the end.

Your source is 1080, therefor your subs are 1080.

If you crop the subs you will lose something, you could crop your movie to almost any dimension you want.

So what would you do in my situation then? Sacrifice file size and efficiency by leaving black space in the video? Spend 20 mins to half an hour of hands-on work for each video, in addition to the actual encode?

How many videos that you encode do you actually leave untouched dimension-wise? As I mentioned, the vast majority of videos require a bit of trimming, which again, means that PGS files really aren't supported by HB unless burned in.

So you're going to blame HB for your player mishandling it, when HB itself handles it fine?

Yes, it's still your choice of player that's the problem.

So, for anyone else scouring the internet for a semblance of a solution to this, here's the best workaround I can manage:

-Process file through HB as .mkv, including the passthrough PGS.
-Extract .sup file from the .mkv via mkvtoonix and the MKVExtractGUI.
-Open extracted .sup file with BDSup2Sub.
-Under "Conversion Options", click "Apply Free Scaling"
-Do a little bit of math. Divide the source dimension by the cropped dimension (for example, 1920 / 1444 [after trimming 238 px of black space off each side of video] = 1.3296). Put that number into the appropriate scale box (either X or Y).
-What you've done is pre-stretch the captions by the same magnitude that they will later be smushed by the player.
-Set output format in BDSup2Sub as SUP(BD), and export.
-Open the original .mkv with mkvtoonix-gui.
-Deselect the original subtitle file--we won't be needing that any longer.
-Add the newly created SUP file into the .mkv instead, and remux.

Below is the sample from before, not burned in, after running through the process above:

It's not the most elegant solution, as I believe BDSup2Sub still applies it's processing, reducing the quality of the sub images considerably. It does, however, ensure a subtitle completely accurate to the original source rather than being poorly interpreted through OCR, or smushed to where you can barely read it after Handbrake processing, and while it takes many steps, the actual time investment is negligable (it takes less than 2 minutes of actual hands-on time).

I do still feel it's something that Handbrake should be able to account for, since it already knows the percentage that you're trimming your video, and since the PGS file dimensions are irrelevant to the video dimensions after encoding--no matter what player you use to play it back. The problem is that HB is passing through a file that has hard-coded dimensions that are no longer relevant, rather than adjusting it.

No, it's not the player. Any player that uses PGS would have the same issue. The issue is that HB is letting you passthrough a sub file with hard-coded dimensions that are no longer valid or relevant, since you're cropping in HB. The player is playing the files as they are coded. Handbrake is the encoder that's letting inaccurate information through.

You act like there is a player out there that could handle it differently, when there's not. Handbrake is permanently adjusting the video dimensions, while leaving inaccurate dimensions in the subtitle file.

It's the subtitle decoder's job responsibility to adjust the subtitles for changes in resolution, sorry. All the necessary information is present in the bitstream.

Feel free to write a PGS subtitle encoder for HandBrake if you like (because yes, that's what we need to make any changes to the subtitle bitstream: decode, make changes to the decoded image, then re-encode to PGS).

If it needs to be an external step, then fine--there are plenty of other external processes involved in preparing a video for encoding. To me, the issue is that HB is letting you passthrough something that will not be relevant on any player.

I adore HB, and it has changed the face of how I enjoy my entertainment over the years. I appreciate anyone who contributes to the success of the program and thank you again for the time and thought those commenting here have given. It simply struck me as odd that HB has the option to pass PGS through, when 9/10 of the time it won't look right afterwards (because maybe 1/10 of videos I process don't need some cropping). I have an imperfect workaround now, though still more perfect than any other subtitle options in my opinion, and will move forward with that process now.

Thanks again for your time.

You may want to simply tell handbrake to NOT crop the video; If you're playing a 1440x1080 video on a 1920x1080 screen, the display is going to put the bars back in anyway. You will have a larger file, but the subtitles will be the "right size".

I've had to do this with (essentially) 1920x800 sources, where the subtitles were placed to be in (or overlap) the letterbox area.

I agree that would be the easiest solution. I think it would increase file size more than I'm willing to allow, plus I was able to figure a work-around if you didn't see above. Give this a shot on your similar videos. It's a lot of steps, but realistically takes less than 2 minutes to do, and uses programs most people probably already have in their encoding toolbox (all free):
