Confused over subtitles, they don't encode

Hello

I am backing up my blu-rays to a manageable MP4 file, this is the process I'm using.
AnyDVDHD - to rip the files from the disk to the HDD
MakeMKV to take just the film with english audio and english subs into a single MKV file
Handbrake to recode the single MKV file to MP4

The problem I have is that I select the subtitles option in Handbrake, but on the final MP4 there are no subtitles at all, nothing is there. I haven't used the burn in option, as I only want them for when the actors are mumbling, or a foreign language section.

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.
Using the latest 64 bit Handbrake (v 0.10.5.0) on Windows 7 64bit.

If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong I would be very pleased! I've looked through the help section and FAQs and I can't spot what I'm doing wrong.

The only thing I don't have is the subs as an external .srt file but I don't think that's required, or is it?

Mp4 does not support soft pgs (Blu Ray) subtitles, you will have to either burn them in or find a text based version online.

Ah, I see...hmmm, that could be tricky then!

I was recoding to MP4 as it's generally more compatible, but a few of my devices will play MKV, if I recode to a lower file size MKV will that give me more options regarding subtitles?

Oh! Hmm, I don't understand that. There is a section in that film where they talking in another langauge, so I would have thought it would auto pop-up in english.

Hmmm, well I've had a little more success.

Based on what's been said above, I recoded using MKV instead of MP4 and auto subtitles. This time it has saved subs, but they don't come up when they should do for foreign language parts....I still don't understand what I'm doing wrong there.

Can someone take a quick look at this please and tell me how to make it so the subs automatically display when there is another language dialogue, but are also available to switch on constantly if required.

There are no soft forced subtitles on this disc. If there should be, they're probably hardcoded in the image, try setting cropping to custom: 0/0/0/0 and see if any forced subtitles show up.

Either that or you didn't include all English-language subtitle tracks in MakeMKV (the only subtitle track in your MKV covers the entire feature).

Some movies, instead of using "forced" subs, will instead have the automatic subs in a separate subtitle track that is then flagged as the "default" subtitle track when playing the disc. I think Spectre is an example of one of those movies, and the subtitles you want are the 2nd English subtitle track on the disc. If you didn't include that track in your MakeMKV output, you'll have to do it over again.

Either way, I don't mind the extra encoding that has to be done, I'm lucky in that I can encode on a separate PC so it doesn't slow down my day-to-day PC working, but it does take 2-3 to recode, depending on the settings.

In your current MakeMKV output, that may be true. I'm suggesting that you missed selecting the appropriate subtitle track when you ran MakeMKV. From what I'm seeing, the 5th subtitle track on the disc is the one you are looking for. It's possible the order is different on your version of the disc, but there should be an additional English track on the disc regardless.
