Can't change aspect 0.10.3

Post by andrewk89 »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:
Using HandBrake 0.10.3 x64 on Windows 10 x64. Trying to transcode a video that has the wrong aspect ratio. The source video is 640 x 480. In VLC, I have to force 16:9 aspect ratio to display correctly. In prior versions of HandBrake, I was able to change the display aspect ratio during a transcode, but 0.10.3 is not able to change the display aspect ratio in the target video.

Trying to transcode with HandBrake x264 or x265 and can't change the aspect ratio.

Example settings I tried include (640x480 source):
x264 Very Slow Preset, Film Tune, loose, 848 width
x264 Very Slow Preset, custom, Modulus 16, Display Width 848
x264 Very Slow Preset, Strict
x265 with the same as above

Noticed if you are trying to use Anamorphic Loose, you can set the width (e.g. 848), but when tab out of the field, it resets to the source video width (e.g. 640). You are unable to increase the width using the up/down arrow buttons. It's like

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.
HandBrake 0.10.3 x64 on Windows 10 x64.

Do you really need to transcode? It would take seconds to change the aspect ratio with FFmpeg.

Yes I need to transcode. Need to reduce space, so converting to x265 HEVC.

Was using 0.10.something and transcoding to x264 AVC. Sometimes I needed to change the aspect ratio and it worked correctly.

Switched to 0.10.3 to get x265 1.8 and switch my process from x264 to x265. No matter which codec, 0.10.3 cant change the aspect ratio. Was working in older versions, but broken in 0.10.3.

Honestly don't feel like investigating FFmpeg. I'm not a CLI guy. Handbrake has the capability to do it through the GUI, but it's broken.

Hi andrewk89,

I've come across incorrect aspect (squeezed) videos and Handbrake not allowing upscaling also. Here's what I've done to fix 'em up in Handbrake v0.10.x for x264 encodes. (edit: Win7 64bit Handbrake 0.10.3 64bit.)

1 - Start Handbrake, do not load a video
2 - Create a new Preset with the "+Add" button
3 - Name your new Preset
4 - For Max Size select Custom - I use "insane" resolution of 3840x2160 (1920x1080 doubled)... choose what you need.
5 - Click "Add"
6 - Select this new Preset as Default
7 - Picture Tab - change Size Defaults to Anamorphic "None" Modulus "2". (edit: uncheck "Keep Aspect Ratio")
8 - Update Preset

Load the video... You should now be able to upscale the resolution of any video to the Max Size you set. There are times when Handbrake will not allow upscaling even when you are using this Preset. If this happens, have this Preset as default, click on another preset (like "another" "high profile"), then click back again to your new Preset. It usually catches. Tinker with it.

Change your resolution as needed, ie, source: 640x480 > output: 854x480... you should notice in Picture Tab > Output: that storage resolution and Display resolution should be the same (in this example: 854x480).

Having come across lecture with still slide videos with squeezed aspects I make a Master video first with the aspect corrections, then recode for the size I need. The quality of 640x480 squeezed to 854x480 16:9 doesn't cut it! Here's what I do which also "cleansup" the video.

1 - Assuming 16x9 is correct - source: 640x480 > output: 1280x720
2 - decomb: default - denoise: nlmeans=4.5:0.5:3:3:3:1 (use luma and chorma as needed)
3 - Constant Quality=15 - FrameRate=SameAsSource - Constant Framerate - Use Advanced Settings
4 - Advanced:
level=4.1:fast-pskip=0:mixed-refs=1:vbv-bufsize=25000:vbv-maxrate=20000:rc-lookahead=60:qp-min=5:qp-max=35:ref=4:bframes=16:b-adapt=2:direct=auto:b-pyramid=strict:me=umh:subme=10:merange=64:analyse=all:trellis=2:deblock=-1,-1

The above cleans up the lecture videos quite nicely as a "general default" start point. Encoding will be longer than usual because of the nlmeans denoising and other high settings.

Now, recode the video from this Master with the settings you need for a final output video.

Hope this helps and is useful for ya.
