Start iTunes. Click File. Click Add File to Library. Find file in your file system and select it. Click Open. Chant mantra, "I pray that iTunes will accept this offering of a video file" repeatedly, until iTunes returns control to you.

As long as the file extension is correct (.m4v) and you have used the iPad preset in handbrake, you have a better than even chance that iTunes will make the video available to the iPad.

But iTunes has been known to decide you need to convert the video IN iTunes, which may or may not work. I gave up on that. Now I convert stuff for my android tablet, and stuff I want to watch on iOS appears on an internal web page on my network. That works far more often than iTunes every did for video.

Seems there IS no itunes on ipad. Just itune store.
I have an iPad Camera Connection Kit. One on-line link gave instructions on converting my file using Handbrake and placing on an SD card which the Connection Kit accepts. I converted the file renamed it DSC_0001 as instructed...no go.

If you need help with an apple product you need to use there support channels.

Placing content on you iPad is the job of iTunes. It has nothing to do with HandBrake.
