4:3 to 16:9

Post by Winston45 »

I like to play and record video in 4:3 aspect ratio and of course people on youtube want to see 16:9 and I can't seem to figure out how to get it to ignore the aspect ratio of 4:3 and stretch it to 16:9. Anyone have an idea of how to stretch it so there are no black bars?

If you don't want it distorted, you want to crop it vertically to a 16:9 ratio. That would provide the least loss of detail.

There are a few approaches you can do depending on how the original recordings appear.

1. If your original recording is letterboxed (has black areas at the top and bottom of your screen) or you simply don't care about the top and bottom of the picture, you can crop the picture using the Picture tab. A letterboxed source can usually be addressed using Automatic cropping while a manual cropping lets you do it regardless of the source.

2. If you're trying to take your encoded 4:3 source and, as you say, stretch (distort) it to 16:9, this is beyond the scope of Handbrake. You need to take your finished encode and run it through another program to alter the aspect ratio. IINM, you can use MP4Box if you output an .mp4 file and mkvtoolnix if you output an .mkv file.
