File Size for DTS-HD vs DTS: Should they be identical?

Posted: Fri Mar 20, 2015 1:29 pm
by ckronengold
I encode my bluray discs for use on my tablets and smartphones. No reason for Plex to do transcoding on the fly.

I generally create a file shrinking the actual resolution down to 720 x XXX, based on aspect ratio (old habit from lower resolution devices), and compress using RF22.

With blurays coming with both DTS-HD and DTS soundtracks, I have tended to encode from the DTS down to a 192 kbps stereo audio track for portable devices. My thinking was that it would do less compression starting with a smaller, already compressed audio track rather than the fully, uncompressed track. But I decided to run a test and see if I should be using the DTS-HD instead.

Interestingly, the resulting file sizes came out exactly the same. Or at least interesting to me. Is that what 'should' happen? Are the algorithms so good that they recognize what has already been removed/compressed from DTS-HD to DTS and just 'finishing the job' so to speak? I was surprised to see them come out exact, rather than just close.

Both files ended up being 594,671KB.

Here's the relevant parts of the logs:

We can pass DTS-HD through to the output, but only the core can be decoded. So when re-encoding, you're always re-encoding the regular DTS core substream.

Oh, well how 'bout that. I figured it was something along those lines that I was overlooking, but thought I'd ask.

Thanks for the reply and for the amazing program. My media consumption habits wouldn't be the same without Handbrake.
