problem converting avi files dvsd

Hi everyone, it's just that I use this great program, however I would like to ask a question: I am converting some files from DV video (dvsd) very heavy (more giga) to mp4 or mkv, why converting me back movies shorter?
In other words why the conversion works only with a part of the file?

AVI files larger than 4gb are not supported in Handbrake. You need convert them to MKV first.

That's going to depend upon your operating system.... Punch "convert avi to mkv" into your favorite search engine, and a number of possibilities come up, both free and paid, for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Each has different options.

The important one you need is "support for large AVI files".
