Can I force the .mp4 file to be saved at display size?

Post by 97Cobra »

Greetings,

First, thank you for any guidance you can offer. I will attempt to be as quick as I can. No activity log is included as it didn't seem pertinent.

I'm saving my DVD collection to a portable HD that I plug directly into my LG LCD TV's USB port. My problem is, the TV doesn't seem to know what to do with an anamorphic video. It only plays @ 720X480, not full screen. If I plug the HD into my BD player's USB port (also connected to the same TV via HDMI) the same movie files play at full screen. It is much more convenient for me to operate with the HD plugged directly into the TV. Is there a way to force Handbrake to save the .mp4 file at the display size of 856X480?

I have tried messing with the settings in Handbrake, and searching the web as well as this forum. To be honest I'm clearly not as smart as I thought I was. This stuff can get quite confusing.

Thank you in advance for your time and attention. And for all the work you do in building HandBrake and supporting it on this forum. It is greatly appreciated!

There should be a setting on your LG TV to adjust the display size.

Yes. With Anamorphic=none, and Keep Aspect=unchecked, set the square pixel display dimensions manually.
Further questions, attach your encode log.

Thank you for the reply GegiBoy. I tried all of the display settings on the TV. None have any affect when using direct HD to USB port. When using the USB port on the Blue ray disc player the display settings work and I'm able to play the movies at full screen.

Thanks musicvid. That was what I thought would work also. Problem is when I set anamorphic to "None" and uncheck "Keep Aspect Ratio" it will not allow me to put any number larger than the "Source: 720 X 480 into the boxes. I click the boxes manually input 854 X 460 but when I click to another box such as "File" the 854 I put in changes back to 720 all on it's own. Numbers below the source size will stay, any number above the source size is changed to source size.

Before HandBrake I tried a program called Freemake Video Converter. The files from that program would display at full screen but the sound sync was terrible. It was like watching an old Japanese monster flick.

Thank you for your time!

[EDITED]
Sorry, either something has changed a little in recent builds, or else my memory is faulty.

The way to do this is to set anamorphic = none, leave maintain aspect = checked, set modulus = 8, and adjust the VERTICAL resolution to 480. Be sure all cropping is at 0. This should do what you (we) want (856x480 @1.0 PAR).

If you want more control (for instance 864 width), you should still be able to do this in the CLI interface.
In the GUI as it now stands, it looks like one can get 854 width at mod 2 (this is the closest ratio), 852 at mod 4 (close + more compatible), 856 at mod 8, and 848 at mod 16 (with NTSC Widescreen source).

Personally, I most often use 856x480 as you do, or 864x480, since 9:5 is such a handy ratio to use with head math, and "very" close to 16:9.
