Having issues with aspect ratio

Post by Alloneword »

Hi everyone it's my first post here and I’m a virgin where handbrake is concerned, so go easy on me please.

I'm trying to convert my DVD to mkv but when i do the aspect ratio seems to go awol making the mkv file awful to watch, now i have to admit i know very little about aspect ratio, i know the difference between 4:3 and 16:9 and that's about it, while playing the dvd in the pc and using powerdvd the info i can gain is as follows:
TV System 625/50 (PAL)
Aspect ratio 16:9
Source picture resalouction 720x576 (625x50)

However once i have done the conversation the video playback (using media player classic) with a video of 1365x552, however MPC also states "Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 720x552 (455:184) 25.00fps [Video]
Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo [Audio]" the upshot is the video looks pants, here is my activity log for this session, I hope it's of some help but please bear in mind i'm new guys, i'm happy to learn but for now best if you work on the basis of i know very little, you won't be far wrong.

You have to tell us what you expect - what should the aspect ratio be? Is it a cinematic width movie or 16:9 or 4:3?

Thanks for the reply mduell sorry i thought giving the 1365x552 info would have been enough for you (told you i was a newbie) ok film is 1:85.1 (16:9ish) and i guess i'm just trying to get as close to that as poss in mkv format, when i say as close to that i mean so film does not look distorted like it is now.

Either you are changing something you shouldn't, or the file is messed up. Handbrake thinks your file is 2.37 instead of 1.85. Maybe try the scanning the DVD instead of selected VOB files.

Well i tried to rip directly from the DVD and got the following error pop up

Image

I'm guessing this is something to do with copy protection on the DVD, i did use DVD Decrypter to rip it to hdd which did give me a text file that says the following

Code: Select all

0x20 - Subtitle - English - [SubPicture 01: Wide/Letterbox/Pan & Scan] / LBA: 312 / PTS: 00:00:01.320 / Delay: 1040ms
0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 20 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 720x576 (PAL) / 16:9 / Pan-Scan & Letterboxed / LBA: 1 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
I'm going to try ripping it one more time with ImgBurn and see how that goes, see if i get any different results.

Development of DVD Decrypter ceased years ago and ImgBurn is NOT a ripper (Neither is Handbrake)

There is a FREE verion of DVD Fab that you may be able to use but updates for newer titles can take up to 120 days to be implemented. Also MakeMKV can be used.

Why are you switching sources in the middle of an issue instead of using the same source?
