Mkv settings to keep video+audio as close or same as source?

Post by francis247uk »

Hi, first time poster, have searched but cannot find a similar question/answer.

I have converted some DVDs into .mkv files with MakeMKV, what I would now like to do is convert them into m4v/mp4 whilst keeping the video+audio quality as close to the source or the same, without any audio lag.

The file size staying large would not be a problem.

I have previously tried the program mkvtomp4 for it's simple interface, but the audio was out of sync.

Handbrake looks like a brilliant program but none of the presets seems to be for a "same as source" option, and because I'm not an expert I'm not 100% sure what all the video/audio options would need to be to encode with same as source settings.

If a Windows Handbrake expert could advise it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

If you have a Mac then try MP4Tools.

I unfortunately don't know of a Windows based program other than the one you listed.

I think Drax is supposed to be similar to Subler, but for Windows.

1. Open your MKV in Handbrake.
2. Select the normal preset, choose an RF that is visually pleasing to you.
3. Encode your mp4.

There is no such thing as "same as source" when you are encoding one format to another.
You can wrap mpeg-2 in an mp4 container using third part tools.

Hi,

Video:
If size is not your main concern, using a preset of 18 or 17 I don't appreciate quality loss (to my eyes). I also use high quality options in advanced settings (Uneven Multi-Hexagon & Q9 or Q10, uncheck "No DCT Decimate", set Trellis on - 2). It takes longer but the results are great. You'll need some practice to learn the meaning of each setting to take the most advantage of the program. It's the best one IMO (paid or free).

Here you have a very good article to choose the most compatible settings for different devices:

Audio:
You can choose copying the existing audio tracks as they are (to not re-encode)

It goes back to a basic question....

Why do you want to re-encode the original MKV's anyway?
