Handbrake presets

Can anyone tell my why the Handbrake presets rescale files to other odd sizes?

For example, when encoding a 1920x1080 movie, and selecting the Handbrake Apple TV preset, the output file changes to 1921x1042, or 1920x800?
See log below.

Apple TV 3 can play 1920x1080 files. Why are the dimensions of the file changed with the Handbrake preset, and not left 1080p?
This happens with the other presets as well, like iPad, and the output file is 1279x694 (instead of the standard 1280x720).

HandBrake will crop any black bars from the edges of the frame, which means your output video can have smaller dimensions than the input.

Is this the reason the apple tv encoded files will not sync with iPad 3?

Is there anyway to prevent the cropping, and leave files in their original 1920x1080 format while encoding?

Set it to custom, 0/0/0/0 in the picture settings. Though I don't think that's causing your iTunes sync issue, it's worth a try.

Thanks. Any pros and cons of keeping files the same dimensions as the originals (1920x1080, 1280x720, etc) vs letting hand break resize and trim the black bars?

Obviously there was a reason all the handbrake presets were created the way they are, to resize the files.

Well, you do waste some file size encoding the black bars if you don't crop.
