Won't finish scanning titles without error (UPDATED)

Post by match »

I'm having an error when trying to scan my Doctor Who bluray movie. I've only encoded one other bluray before, but I had no problems with that one. I thought maybe it was the disc, however I've ripped it with AnyDvd and it finished fine with no errors. I also tried with MakeMkv and it also removed protection and detected the main movie track just fine. The disc also plays fine through my ps3.

I keep getting the error "No titles found. Your source may be copy protected, badly mastered or in a format which Handbrake does not support." The activity logs seem to all end with "Interlaced frames/fields support is incomplete". Not sure what that suggests.

I'm using the latest 64-bit nightly, svn4602, with Windows 7.

Below are a list of different things (along with their scan logs) that I have tried.

When I select the folder above the BDMV folder (scan log below), it does finish scanning without errors. I get a bunch of .mpls tracks. However, the main feature seems to be missing. None of them are longer than 9 minutes. In fact, when I processed the bluray through makemkv, it detected "00125.mpls" as the main feature. However in Handbrake, the title selections only go up to 119.

I tried scanning the "STREAM" folder (scan log below). It starts processing the titles, but stops at 59 out of 66 with the error message "No titles found. Your source may be copy protected, badly mastered or in a format which Handbrake does not support."

I tried scanning the .m2ts file directly (scan log below) but after a long pause, I get the same "no titles found" error as above.

Then I tried scanning the mkv file that MakeMKV successfully created (scan log below) and still get the same "no titles found" error message.

I also tried creating (through anydvd) and scanning an .iso file, but got the same error.

One more thing...There is another "main" title track on the disc that is a "making of the movie". It is also almost an hour long. This track gives me the same errors as when trying to scan the main movie. Like the main feature, it doesn't show up on the mpls list and gives me the same error when trying to scan the m2ts file. However, strangely, I can scan and encode any one of the smaller m2ts files or the smaller mpls tracks that show up, just fine.

Your expert help is appreciated. Thanks!

UPDATE: Not sure if anyone looked at this post yet, but just wanted to add that I tried ripping/encoding two more Dr. Who Bluray movies and I ran into the same exact issue on both of them. Main feature doesn't show up in the list of mpls after ripping from anydvd. And it won't read an mkv made from makemkv.

The issue isn't with the rip, it's with the chosen video codec for these Blu-ray titles. HandBrake uses libav to handle the VC1 codec and it doesn't (as yet) support interlaced VC1 streams. Fortunately, interlaced VC1 titles are quite rare with the exception of titles from the BBC, who seem obsessed with using this codec.

If you want to point fingers, blame Sony for lacking the foresight to include 1080/25p in the Blu-ray standard. If they had, we wouldn't have to deal with many of the quirks surrounding content produced for European TV.

Flo: I don't believe the movie I have is 25p. I'm pretty sure the framerate is 29.97. Does it matter because the original framerate was 25p? So guys, I'm assuming there's no way to encode this movie with Handbrake. If it's o.k. to ask here...do you know of any software that could do this? I'd hate to think that it's not possible for me to compress this to use with my media server.

Doctor Who, like a lot of European TV productions, was shot at 1080p25. Blu-ray doesn't support that format natively, so the series was converted to 1080i50 for the European release (matching the BBC's own HD broadcasts) and 1080i60 for the US version. Hence the comment that if Sony had shown more foresight, we might have these European TV productions in their native format.

I had the same issue with the BBC Wonders of the Solar System bluray, to over come it you must use makemkv program to rip the bluray to an mkv then use ripbot264 to convert.

Embattle: Thanks for the tip. I actually already did something very similar. I used makemkv and then ran it through a program called StaxRip. It was a pretty decent program with lots of options. It created a very nice looking video with DTS and all. A bit too many options for my taste, but I was able to reproduce the x264 options pretty close to what I use in Handbrake. At least mediainfo seems to say I did. So I am happy there. I hope Handbrake adds support for these kinds of movies in the future. I prefer Handbrake to other programs, but am glad there was a worthy alternative.

The one thing that staxrip and ripbot264 have in common is their access to the Microsoft VC1 decoder, which isn't available under linux or OS X.
