Opening WTV Causes CLI to Crash

Post by arrmo »

Hi,

My apologies if I'm not providing all the right details - I'm new to HandBrake, so trying to provide the right info, but let me know if not and I'll get it for you!

I am trying to open a wtv file that I have recorded with Media Center (to convert it to my iPod). The corresponding dvr-ms file works OK, but I would like to skip this extra step of course (but it does say that the recording is OK).

When I try to select the wtv file (Source -> Video File), I get an error message that "HandBrakeCLI.exe has stopped working". Then HandBrake provides an error message of "No Title(s) found.". Any suggestions of things to try? BTW, I am running svn4403 (but the same thing happened with 0.9.5).

The scan log file is below, hope it helps.

Thanks!

You have to convert to DVR-MS first.

Makes sense - thanks! I made a (bad) assumption that wtv could be read, given that recent versions of ffmpeg support this.

My mistake, sorry for the post - but thanks for the answer!

No, this should work (in the nightly, that is - which you are using). We need to see a sample that reproduces the crash if you want us to investigate, however.

Hi,

Do you know of a way to split (shorten) a wtv file? My file is ~ 30 min of HD video, so ~ 3 GB ... a bit large to upload (I assume).

Thanks!

I'm afraid not. How did you end up with a WTV file in the first place?

It's a recording from Windows Media Center (Windows 7). Let me see if I can find a test wtv file to try out.

Try recording something new; hopefully it will also trigger a crash.

Samples from copyrighted material should be as short as possible.

Will do - can do that this evening. Will record ~ 30 seconds from an off-air channel.

Where do I store the file?

Thanks!

Just about any file hosting service will do - e.g. Dropbox, localhostr, mediafire…

Well, this is interesting ... :-). I recorded a new file, much smaller (~ 100 MB, 1 min of HD video) - and this wtv file works fine. Both play in VLC though, but just the larger one (~ 3.3 GB) doesn't work.

Could it perhaps be the file size?

Thanks for your help!

I have not used WTV; but, every software and hardware PVR records indexing errors in the program stream. Generally, those errors are more easily overcome in a player than in an encoder application or NLE. Take your big file, run it through the "Quickstream Fix" utility in VideoRedo h264 (trial version), and see if that makes a difference. "Might" just make all the difference.

Hi,

If I understand VideoRedo h264 correctly (which I may not!), it will convert my WTV file to H.264. I have found that this file works with MediaCoder and Freemake (can transcode), and also plays and transcodes in VLC ... so I could be wrong, but I think the file itself is OK, agreed?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Sorry for being ignorant, I had assumed WTV was already h264, which would be smart-rendered.
I do know that the guy at VideoRedo has gone to a lot of effort to make the software work with WTV, so that route might still be worth a try.
"If" source indexing errors are part of the problem (and that's only a guess), you can be sure VRD will take care of them.

Hi,

I ran HandBrakeCLI manually to see what the error message is - it seems to be related to headers / stream information, it never even gets to the point where it starts to transcode.

For the file that fails, here is what the CLI indicates ...

Code: Select all

 Duration: 00:31:57.87, start: 1.650978, bitrate: 14219 kb/s
    Stream #0.0[0x4b](eng): Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16, 448 kb/s
    Stream #0.1[0x4c]: Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p, 1920x1080 [PAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 65000 kb/s, 37.88 fps, 29.97 tbr, 10000k tbn, 59.94 tbc
    Stream #0.2[0x4d](spa): Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, mono, s16, 192 kb/s
    Stream #0.3[0x4e]: Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
    Stream #0.4[0x0]: Attachment: mjpeg
    Metadata:
      title : TV Thumbnail
[21:54:11] add_ffmpeg_subtitle: unknown subtitle stream type: 0x17007
Segmentation fault

Interestingly enough, this file has a thumbnail for some reason (can see it in Windows), but the file that works does not (and does not show this stream).

Could this be the issue?

Thanks!

Hi,

I tried first having Windows convert the .wtv file to a .dvr-ms file ... and it worked fine. So I don't think it's the video content itself, but rather how HandBrake is handling the header information ... agreed?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

We really need to see a short sample that triggers the crash if we are to do something about it.

Hi,

Trying to create one, no luck yet. I can provide the 3 GB file, if you want - I don't mind. It's only a download issue, not processing (as it crashes before even starting).

I can also provide the log files for the wtv and dvrms files (to allow you to compare). Just let me know what works for you.

Thanks!

Please try tomorrow's nightly build, it should fix the crash:
