5-1/2 Hours and nothing

Post by oggy »

I have a DVD with French subtitles which I bought in France a couple of years ago.
Recently I found some decent English subtitles for it and am trying to make a MKV rip with the new subs.
My first attempt was not very successful. I ripped the DVD with DVD Fab Decrypter, loaded the VIDEO_TS folder into HB 0.9.5, didn't use a Preset as I didn't believe it was necessary, under the Video tab selected H.264(x264), Target size 1600MB, 2-Pass Encoding, Turbo first pass. Under the Subtitle tab Import SRT, left default box unticked. Left everything else as default settings.
It all seemed to be working OK, but when it eventually completed there was no Output folder and no MKV file.
There is 53GB free space on the drive. Any thoughts as to where I went wrong?

Since your disk is apparently not full, check:

- that the output directory exists

- that you have permission to write to it

Well the directory exists 'Desktop' and I'm writing to it all the time.
The folder 'New folder' I assumed HB was going to create it.

HandBrake won't create a directory for you.

The Nightly build will automatically do it pre-encode, but the current release doesn't.

I tried this again after creating a destination folder.
It seems that the 5-1/2 hours I mentioned was just for the 1st (turbo) pass. Handbrake then started the 2nd pass at an average 3fps which it estimated would take a further 11-1/2 hours.
Is this what I should expect with my set-up?

Is this a single-core Celeron? If so, that speed looks normal.

OK, thanks.
Yes it is Celeron single core. System is like me getting a bit long in the tooth, time for an upgrade I think - the computer I mean. :?

Why two-pass encoding? Use a reasonable RF value and do Constant Quality (DVDs should be in the RF18-22 range).

I wanted to keep the file size under 2GB to put on a FAT32 formatted USB stick and had no idea what size I would finish up with using Constant Quality.

You can do this two ways -- first, encode just a small portion (using either seconds or frames) and then just multiply up -- if you do at least a minute this will give you a very accurate guesstimate of what the total time will be (and you can adjust the RF to suit, moving it to a higher number until you reach the sweet spot).

Then, in general, you can takes these settings to the bank for all but the most extreme videos (those with a lot of grain or those scrubbed so clean digitally they compress very very well). For example, using the High Profile settings (with no other changes except to output to MKV and passthrough AC3 and/or DTS audio) I typically get a two hour DVD movie in 1GB. For a blu-ray, I get a typical two hour movie in 7GB. Does this vary? Of course (particularly with blu-ray -- those sizes can climb rapidly upwards) but experience tells me almost precisely what a movie will be based on the content.

If you're doing DVDs I'd just use the High Profile preset and you know you'll be under your 2GB limit (it will *never* get larger). If you're doing blu-rays then change the RF to 24 or so and give it a shot (you may have to go much higher but tests will determine). In the long run it will be MUCH faster (and better anyway, as the results will be better).

Right, thank-you.
Time for a bit of experimenting.

I encode at RF 18.25, which is overkill for most sources but bits are cheap (remember: higher RF values = lower quality. RF 20 is lower quality and smaller file sizes vs RF 18).

Even then, my encodes USUALLY are about 1gb per hour encoded. There can be wide variation in that, but it's a decent estimation at that RF value.

If you encode at RF19, you'll get pretty much DVD quality and I would hazard a guess that you would very rarely exceed 2gb for movies.
