DVD series with "Play All" and Handbrake question

I have Spartacus: Blood and the Sand season one DVD's. There are 4 DVD's and each one has 4 episodes on them. I'd like to rip all 4 episodes from the DVD(s) but not have 4 .mkv's for each DVD. I'd like to join/combine the 4 titles into one .mkv. Reading on the forums here, people suggest that if you have the "Play All" ability on the DVD then you should have one large title on the DVD that will be all 4 episodes together. You could then transcode that one title and be done with it. However, a scan of the DVD does not reveal this. According to Handbrake, I have 8 titles on the first disc. Four of those titles are 50+ minutes which I assume are the individual episodes. The other four of those titles are much smaller. Three of them are under a minute and one is just over eight minutes. I am assuming that is just the BS extra content that is added to the disc.

So how does the "Play All" work in this case? There doesn't seem to be one large monster title that has all the episodes back-to-back. What do I need to do in order to achieve my goal? I have attached a scan log below:

Discs that have a "Play All" option usually have a single large title that has all the episodes together. If your disc doesn't have this, then HandBrake can't encode them as one large file. You have to find a way to combine them before or after encoding. Before encoding, you can just concatenate the VOB files. But this is a manual effort and you lose chapter information when you do this. There may be tools to assist with this, I don't know. There are various tools for joining them after encoding (mkvmerge, MP4Box). People have mixed success with these. They sometimes result in loss of sync. So your options aren't too good.

Yeah, having one .mkv per episode won't work for me. I use SageTV as my whole house DVR experience. Unfortunately, if I were to put every episode inside its own container (i.e. .mkv) my movie collection will be littered with this Series DVD covers in my movie browser. I'm trying to only have one cover for each disc which is why I was hoping to join these .mkv's together. I'll keep looking for a solution then...

Rip your DVD to hard drive, use dvd shrink to re-author it with the first title only and backup. Then repeat with the second, third, and fourth titles all to different folders or they will overwrite eachother. Suggestion My Documents\DVD Shrink 1, My Documents\DVD Shrink 2, My Documents\DVD Shrink 3, My Documents\DVD Shrink 4 You get the idea. Then use DVD2One. Load the first title select "add seamless title" and select the second title Backup to a new folder i.e. My Documents\DVD2One 1. Then load your new joined title 1+2 in DVD2One and "add seamless title" title 3. Then repeat with 4. Save your final DVD however you like (I prefer an image) and load it into handbrake you should now be able to rip it like you want.

Just wanted to give an update on how I solved my dilemma. I used a varation of what FaiT suggested but instead of using DVDshrink and DVD2One I used MakeMKV and mkvmerge - both free!

First, I ripped the titles off the disc individually with MakeMKV. In my case, I had 4 titles so I ended up with four .mkv files. I then ran each of those through HandBrake. After all transcoding was finished, I ran those transcoded files through mkvmerge in order to get one .mkv with all the titles wrapped into it. I decided to use mergemkv last as I read some people were having issues with Handbrake after running muxed files through it.

It worked brillantly! It took a little bit of time, but honestly, 99% of the time is spent transcoding. Ripping and muxing only takes minutes. The .mkv file plays great on my HTPC-Server and I can stream it to all room in my house!

Now, it would be a hell of a lot easier if these darn studio companies would always have a "Play All" title on the disc! But beggars can't be choosers...

Just had to put my two cents in here: I'm currently ripping several TV series that I have to mp4 files. I have an Argosy Media Player and a 2TB hd that I've set up as my "dvd library". On my hd, I have set up several folders for different genres of movies and tv series. I rip all of my TV episodes individually so they will play consecutively. For example, here's what my tv series folder looks like:
TV Series
~~Friends
~~~~Season 1 (inside are all season one episodes)
~~~~Season 2
etc. When I open the season 1 folder and play "The Pilot", that's all I have to do. Once the first episode is finished, Argosy starts the next one automatically. This is a great little player and I highly recommend it.

I have been ripping my movies in as a m4v files to play through my AppleTV (gen 2). If I do my seasons of X-Files, will these MKVmerge tools work with m4v files? I would really like to set it up like they come from iTunes. I bought my seasons of The Shield through iTunes and each one has a main title folder, then when I click that season it opens up an index of which episode I would like to play. I assume, from what I have been reading between this thread and one about movies that they have split into 2 sides or 2 DVDs due to length of the movie, that this is not going to be obtainable. Is my assumption correct or someone have a solution to make this happen for me?

No. Mkvmerge only works with matroska files.

You will also want to remove the DRM from your iTunes files before you start messing with them.
