v0.9.5 breaks Handbrake on Windows 7 Ultimate

Post by WintelRob »

Well, it looks like it's back to the drawing board for v0.9.5, huh? Doesn't appear to have been well tested, but I thought that there was an optional download for those that wanted the "bleeding edge" instead of a stable release.

I have two systems, one with Windows 7 Ultimate x86 (32-bit) and one with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Both system run identical hardware.

With v0.9.4, I have been successfully converting about 90% of my DVR-MS files on both systems. (For some reason, Handbrake can't even scan some files which are created exactly the same way via MCE.)

I put Handbrake v0.9.5 on the x64 system, and Handbrake could not do anything with the first 10 files I tried. The 11th file was scanned, but it was converted so badly it was not bearable. I went back to v0.9.4 on the x64 system and was able to perfectly convert the file.

I put Handbrake v0.9.5 on the x86 (32-bit) system, and it couldn't find an audio track for at least the first 12 files that I tried. Then I tried to convert some files that I had already converted, and it *still* indicated that there was no audio track found. Well, *obviously*, there IS an audio track, otherwise I could not have done a successful conversion with v0.9.4. I went back to v0.9.4 on this system, and it's back to status quo.

I don't understand why this new version, which is only a 0.0.1 version change, could be so badly changed. I don't understand why it cannot find audio tracks that are clearly there. I do understand that DVR-MS containers are not the easiest to work with, but v0.9.4 was working for most of my DVR-MS files, and v0.9.5 worked for essentially none of them.

I had high hopes that this new version would resolve the issues where some files could not be scanned - for some files the scan starts but never ends and the status window is fairly useless to me. I guess I need to wait for v0.9.6 to be released.

And while I am saying that I think v0.9.5 totally sucks and should have been further tested before release, v0.9.4, when it works, is unsurpassed in results and ease-of-use. (And I evaluated at least 14 different packages, with only one yielding similarly consistent file size-to-output quality results, and it was much more complex to use.)

I hope it's not another year until v0.9.6 is released.... :(

How about because even though we had made nightly builds available for 9 MONTHS prior to the 0.9.5 release, very few users were willing to help us test new code unless we explicitly told them to download a nightly build in order to correct a known bug they were experiencing. Or better yet, how about people who rather than posting logs and helping the development process choose to post nothing more than a complaint before reverting to an earlier release.

If we had known there was a serious issue with transcoding DVR-MS files we would have made every effort to fix it, but since none of our developers use these files in their own workflows and no one stepped forward to test or properly report the issue it remains unfixed. If you had taken a moment to search or even just browse the forums you would have noticed that when a bug is reported, it can be fixed in a matter of HOURS or a few days. A case in point... here a user reports an issue with a log, provides a small sample clip on request and has his fault fixed in less that 48 hours.

This is an open source project, run entirely by volunteers. There is no money for extensive testing or customer feedback... as an end user, YOU are expected to participate in the development process if you want Handbrake to grow and evolve.

Yeah, I tried to download a beta, but what huge pain to get it to work: I'm not a developer. If there was one of those PayPal donation links, I would certainly donate something significant because I am extremely happy with the results when the tool works, which is most of the time. But why would I bother to try to get help when the "tone" of these forums is filled with arrogance and defensiveness for the most part, starting with the "do this or you suck" docs we are supposed to memorize in order to post here.

I am amazed that I am the only person who uses DVR-MS files. Wow. Well, NOW you guys know that v0.9.5 doesn't work properly, but v0.9.4 does. Glad I could help. Now work on getting that donation link set up so I don't have to be a developer, so that v0.9.6 will work properly with DVR-MS files.

Thanks.

Oh come on, it's not that hard. You were able to download and install 0.9.5 which means you could have done so just as easily with the nightly builds.

No one is asking you to be a developer, we're asking you to be a little more proactive in the development process. Handbrake is developed by a core team of four people in their spare time... they have day jobs and families to tend to. Even if we were to accept donations (and there are very good reasons why we don't), a handful of people simply cannot test things as thoroughly as an involved user base can.

As if your posts have been full of politeness and gratitude to the developers who donate their time to the project that in your words "totally sucks."

Well, it looks like it's back to the drawing board for v0.9.5, huh?
Given that this issue will only affect a tiny tiny portion of users, It's not something to be going back to the drawing board for. If you post a proper bug report, someone will look into it.
No need for all this drama and entitlement.
Doesn't appear to have been well tested.
It would cost a huge sums of money and a massive amount of man hours to do any sort of proper testing. It's not something donations or ad's will be able to cover. Not even close.
The only option is to crowd-source it allowing for real world testing and feedback. This is why we have the nightlies. Unfortunately, this will never cover all basis. It'll only ever really touch the most use scenarios. Guessing DVR-MS isn't one of them.

I dunno about you, but the rest of us have jobs, families and what not, and may only have a few hours here and there to work on this project. I, nor anyone else has thousands of hours available to test everything.

Video transcoding is hugely complex. There are also so many non standards complaint applications out there producing crappy files which causes no end of problem. Your literally talking hundreds of decoders, encodes, libraries, formats all throwing their own issues into the mix leading to tens of thousands of possible issues that could occur.

You also have to bare in mind that HandBrake has over a dozen third party libraries that it uses, you're issue could be in any number of those and not HandBrake itself.
I put Handbrake v0.9.5 on the x64 system, and Handbrake could not do anything with the first 10 files I tried. The 11th file was scanned, but it was converted so badly it was not bearable. I went back to v0.9.4 on the x64 system and was able to perfectly convert the file.
Then how about rasing some Bug Reports. If you don't report issues, they won't get fixed.

I am using Handbrake 0.9.5 on Windows 7 Ultimate x86, and it has been nothing but flawless. It is one of 4 computers that have been working 24/7 to convert my over 800GB of files. And I have been checking a few files each day and they are all perfect.

yeah its buggie, there is parts in the video where it skips kind of corroded the audio too. encoding a movie dvd.
9.4 works great.
I'm using dual xeon quad core cpus (8 cores) windows 2008 r2 server. 8gigs of ram
I get around 90 to 160 fps, usually around 130 fps average.
what's up with no x64 support?

This illustrates the issue all too well, doesn't it?

Chip in on an unrelated thread. Provide no solid information. Provide no activity log.

Yes, the developers are obviously slack bastards.

TedJ: I'm having a problem with the thing. It's giving me some error message and the encode shows something different. You screwed up handbrake! Fix that thing that broke while I did something with handbrake on some sort of video!
