Saving Private Ryan - Output file larger then input.

Post by Nephilimator »

As a precursor I have encoded MANY BluRay rips with great success but have come across something odd with Saving Private Ryan. My Input is a 36.3 Gig rip with AC3 audio. After encoding on the same presets I always use (and have been very successfull) the output becomes 36.45 Gigs and the encode takes nearly twice as long (24+ hours) to encode. Here are the logs:

Also I am using SVN3472 with high profile settings but upping the reference frames to 4 with this:

Code: Select all

Don't use a quality of 18: I believe 23-25 is the recommended setting for HD sources

+1 to jamielaw's suggestion - Saving Private Ryan is a beat to encode, lots of noise and grain. RF18 is definitely overkill for any HD encode in any case.

I used 20 and got around 17GB (but then I have a 9' HD screen).

Using 22 is probably all you ever need for this (assuming you have nothing bigger than a 55" HDTV).

How do you get away from all the terrible blocks in black scenes without doing 18 or sometimes even 17 regardless of native HD content? Book of Eli is a perfect example. If I do anything higher then 18 with just the straight up "high profile" and 4 reference frames I get blocking in the dark scenes (almost the entire movie is dark).

I don't know why you're seeing this -- while I don't own "Eli" I have LOTS of HD blu-rays that are dark (like "Daybreakers" or "Pitch Black" -- the very definition of "dark") and they are encoded with High Profile with absolutely no difference from the original blu-ray disc.

The only change I make is to output to an MKV container, but I can't see why that would make any difference. How are you playing your files? On both my HDTV 55" and my 9' HD projector these films look great (output from a WD Live HD unit).

I also output to a MKV container so we are the same on that. I play the files in three different scenarios: Directly on the PC with VLC or Media Player Classic. Or I stream them to my PS3 using PS3 Media Server. Any of these three show terrible blocking in dark scenes UNLESS I have my CQ at 18 or less. I hate to go back to Book of Eli again but that movie was particularly bad enough where I moved it to 16.5 CQ in order to get rid of all the blocking. Out of curiosity which version are you using? Are you using straight up 'High Profile" with no other changes? I would really love to resolve this and ever better if I can reduce the output size by encoding around CQ of 20.

Any chance you could do a test encode, same settings but in an MP4 container? I'm wondering if your issue is related to this one I was reading the other day...

Ted knows far more than I do so I'd try whatever he says but as to what I use, I'm using SVN3154 (I've tried other versions more recent and they don't work as well for me as this one) with the High Profile and the only thing I change other than MKV is to passthrough either AC3 or DTS (oh, I've turned off the decomb and detelecine filters for movies but that shouldn't make any difference as they are only invoked from "default" if needed).

I've been thinking of buying "Eli" so if I ever get around to it and encode it I'll let you know if I see anything bad (but you'd think the two movies I mentioned would have the same issues, as there are moments of extreme darkness in them).

Last night I fired off Saving Private Ryan with CQ of 23 and 4 reference frames in a MKV container. Other then that its standard high profile. It looks pretty decent on my 22'' monitor and I will test it out tonight on my TV when I get home. It's amazing that going from CQ of 20 to CQ 23 reduced the final output to 13 GB as opposed to 36GB. I just hope my dark scenes turn out OK. If the dark scenes are off (blocky) I will attempt to put this into a MP4 container as you are suggesting.

I had this same issue. All the grain in the movie causes the filesize to be huge. I normally encode at CQ20, and when I did that on this title, the encoded file was larger. I ended up just keeping the original as grain is notoriously hard to compress.

As a follow up:

CQ of 23 did not look to shabby. The dark scenes had some blocking as I am used to seeing (oddly other people say they don't see this with dark movies) but they were not horrible. If anybody has encoded Book of Eli with CQ of 20 and had no blocking during the dark scenes please let me know what settings you have used.
