double file lengths

Post by kjamison »

Sorry! I could not think of a better way to describe the problem.

I am converting the Box Set of Moonlighting to upload to my iPhone.

I am using W7 on a QC with 4GB. HB runs like lightning on this system.

I use ripping software that successfully copies the ripped files to HDD and I run HandBrake to convert from VOB to M4V.

I have selected the default setting for "iPhone & iPod Touch" and I have queued 19 episodes to convert.

HB correctly identifies the length of each show and I ignore all but the titles that run for 45 minutes or more.

So far, so good.

Except some of my conversions have file sizes twice the expected size. Should be between 270MB and 330MB. Some have been 540MB up to 660MB in size.

So I check them out and discover the larger files have two consecutive copies of the same show. The time for these files is twice the length of the regular show.

Now, this does not happen on all of the conversions. Out of 19 files, 7 have not converted properly. I've only ripped Seasons 1 & 2 so far.

I have tried to adjust the settings so that I control the size of the file. I suggest 300MB. It ignores me. It makes a 600MB file.

I have watched the CLI window. On the normal conversions, it reaches 100% and then after a brief pause, it starts the next file to convert.

On the 'faulty' files, and I have tried converting them singly, the CLI shows 100% but it sits for another 10-12 minutes before it moves to the next file or it finishes and closes the CLI window.

In short, I have made whatever adjustments I could and it still produces these files as two consecutive recordings of the same episode.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If it happened on all files, I'd reckon my PC wasn't compatible and the fault lies there but it converts the others so easily and quickly. I'm happy to submit further information if need be.

Many thanks,

Rob.

Re: double file lengths

Post by tokyotech »

I asked this last year. The answer was that certain audio sample rates cause this doubling effect to happen. No one answered on how to fix the problem, except to upgrade to the newest nightly build. I wish somehow there was a setting on 0.9.4 to fix this because the nightly generates files that older video players can't play.

And this is related to the original poster's issue how? Not the same type of source (DVD vs. file), not a 22 kHz samplerate in this case, and not even the same issue (the video is repeated twice - it's not an audio issue like yours).

Probably a matter of adjusting the settings. Some defaults have changed between the nightly and 0.9.4. In any case, where is your bug report (or even tech support post)?

kjamison, try Tools > Options and check "Disable dvdnav".

Start a new thread with an encoding log for your degenerate player issue.

I am posting because I have the Exact same issue as the OP.

I am ripping TaleSpin (Disney Cartoon) Volume 1. There is one "episode" on each of the 3 discs that double's itself. When it's ripping the file it hits 100% and then just sits there for about 7 minutes (the time for it to encode it a second time). Then when it's finished the "episode" is twice as long as it should be and if you actually play it back it repeats the episode. I have tried to rip this several times and the end result is the same everytime.

I am using Win 7 X64 with Handbrake 0.9.5. I ripped the DVD's and am converting from the HD (they are in VOB format).

Just downloaded the latest 64bit nightly and it seems to have fixed the problem with at least the first disc. Will update later.
