Quicktime looks bunched up together. The CC area is only one line high and it looks like text is overlapping each other. Is there a work around?
If you're using QuickTime for Windows, the workaround is don't use it. If you're under OS X, that's odd.
phoenixdown wrote:On a side note, should I set burned in to yes or no? I don't want the subtitles to appear automatically. I just want them to show up when selected and testing both options didn't show any difference.
It appears from your test that your source track is a text subtitle track. HandBrake can't burn it in (which is why the checkbox has no effect).

Hi Dave,

New on this forum hope I don't mess.

Your guide is great and has quite imporatn and trick information.

Work with hard sub-titles and it was prety much OK. :D

I regards Soft sub-title .... here is where the problems arose ...

Created a SRT file using SubRip and it generate a file like this ...

1
00:02:57,631 --> 00:03:00,156
I wish you wouIdn't do that around me.
It's so fiIthy !

2
00:03:00,234 --> 00:03:03,726
- Don't give me a problem
about the cigarettes.
- It's such a fiIthy habit.

3
00:03:03,804 --> 00:03:06,932
Oh, my God !
Look at this.

4
00:03:08,776 --> 00:03:12,473
Oh, Jesus !
This is so appaIIing !

5
00:03:13,681 --> 00:03:15,615
I can't beIieve it !

6
00:03:15,683 --> 00:03:18,151
I can't beIieve
they gave it to him.

and this doesn't shows up as sub-title either using VLC or iTunes (which is my main purpose)

Then I import from ALLSUBS this SRT file ..... (which has a problem with timming ... )

0
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:04,000
Downloaded From http://www.AllSubs.org

1
00:00:29,607 --> 00:00:33,646
[Soft instrumental music]

2
00:01:18,807 --> 00:01:21,082
[Chiming instrumental music]

3
00:01:33,167 --> 00:01:35,761
[Lnstrumental music intensifies]

4
00:02:02,207 --> 00:02:04,482
[School bell ringing]

5
00:02:07,207 --> 00:02:09,675
[Lndistinct chatter]

6
00:02:49,527 --> 00:02:51,882
I wish you wouldn't do that.
It's so filthy.

7
00:02:51,967 --> 00:02:55,039
- Don't give me a problem about it.
- It's such a filthy habit.

8
00:02:55,447 --> 00:02:58,439
Oh, my God! Look at this.

9
00:03:00,567 --> 00:03:04,116
Oh, Jesus! This is so appalling!

10
00:03:05,287 --> 00:03:07,118
I can't believe it!

11
00:03:07,207 --> 00:03:09,767
I can't believe they gave it to him.

and this file used with HandBrake work just fine and shows-up the sub-title !!!! (again there is the timming problem ...)

My simple and direct question .... What are the differences between those files? I can't figure one that would give the idea about this behavior (I'm forgetting the timming problems for now)

They look the same ... I saw the block number starts from 0 ... then I tried to make the one from SUbRip starts with 0 .... no way to work ...

Here is the LOG from HandBrake using the SRT file created by SubRip

1) You provided a scan log, not an encode log.

2) What do you need SubRip and an SRT file for if you want hard subtitles? Just select the subtitle track (from the DVD / VIDEO_TS folder /ISO image, not an external SRT file) in HandBrake can check "Burned In".

If those are still the scan LOG then I don't know how to get the encode LOG and need help on this too.

Regarding the HARD subtitle that I'm able to create .... it's true .... BUT I don't want them as HARD I'd like to have them as SOFT ... one just have some more flexibility.

Thanks for any help

Well, it wasn't. If you take two minutes to compare the log in your previous post and the logs you just posted, you should be able to find a few major differences.

The charset probably isn't UTF-8. Determine the proper charset for your file and select it in HandBrake.

I re-read your post and it appears I misread you. Now I get it.

P.S. please don't use bold for all your comments and please post logs in code blocks.

Hi Rodeo,

You got it correctly ... the problem has to do with UTF-8 ... the quick workaround was open SRT using MS/WORD and then write it back as TEXT and renaming it again. So I got clean text and no UTF or whatever it would be .... Thanks for your help.

Few questions remain for me:

1) I've just saved as UNICODE using SubRip ....
2) What is the meaning of UNICODE for SubRip when saving the SRT file?

It also worked fine when I didn't choose UNICODE and use ANSI instead ...

You see I'm missing something somewhere

Thanks again

I'm sorry but that's not a question ;-)

Probably UTF-16.
Bob-Yokoi wrote:It also worked fine when I didn't choose UNICODE and use ANSI instead ...
Perhaps not the best idea if the subtitles contains accented characters.

That was my guess too UTF-16 and tried it not worked.

The question is straight ... when we say UNICODE to SUBRIP what really it means UTF-8, 16 or what ....

Saying it in a different way .... How can one figure out what kind of UTF is inside that SRT file created when one choose UNICODE.

WE are almost getting there ... having SOFT instead of HARD just this little trick regarding these UNICODE stuff from SUBRIP.

Thanks anyhow for your help so far

Some text editors can tell you the character encoding.

A possibly easier alternative would be to open the SRT in a text editor and do a Save As, selecting UTF-8 encoding (IIRC, Notepad can do that but I'm not sure).

Yep ... It did work ....

Summarizing ....

- SRT created by SubRip was UNICODE
- UNICODE must not se the same as UTF-8
- UNICODE is not a valid option for HandBrake
- The easiest way I found was to open the SRT file created by SubRip (UNICODE) using Windows Note Pad using UNICODE and then write it back forcing the option UTF-8
- That way HandBrake was able to make use of that SRT file encoded UTF-8

So all SOF subtitles workd just fine.

I still don't know what is the difference between UTF-8, 16 ... and UNICODE .... Had to make some research.

Thanks guys

Hi all,

I have a problem with the soft subtitle. The things is that there is a part of the movie that i am converting wherein there is a music video being shown while the actors are still saying something. Si basically while watching in a computer, you basicall see two parallel sibtitles, one for the song lyrics and the other is for the script if the actors.

After converting,the subtitles didnt work in parallel, it is showing the lines one by one, causing a problem in the timing. After that part of the movie, it wemt back to normal.

Anyone else experienced this problem? Still finding out what to do :(

Hi all,

I have a problem with soft subs and iPhone 4/iTunes.
When i tried to mux together a srt file, coded in utf-8, with an mp4 video, iTunes/iPhone 4 doesn't show any subs, even if there's the subs icon.

I tried every presets but i had no lucky.

Does anyone know how can fix this problem?

Here's the log

I had the same problem, you guys. What you need to do is find the encoding that both HandBrake AND SubRip support. IIRC it's [numbers]: ISO-latin or something like that, but I'm sure it was the first in that list of ISO encodings.

It's important that you select the above encoding in both HandBrake AND SubRip. Worked for me every time.

Hi,
I found that you can actually do soft subtitles where you can turn them on and off at will, by just changing the subtitle track in Handbrake to not have any boxes checked. But everybody already knows that. My question is....if I can show the subtitles or turn them on and off at will in players like VLC and Quicktime, why can't I do that on my iPod? On my iPod Touch, I go into the "Settings" and change "Closed Captioning" to the "on" setting, but there's still no subs. But when I play the same file on the computer it shows subs or I can disable them if I want. Why won't they show on the iPod? What gives?
Thanks. -AJ

What do you think the first post is all about?

I'll admit that the formatting/layout makes it hard to read and that there's information about the ripping process that's overly detailed and/or irrelevant for a subtitles guide, but the information is there.

I dont want to beat a dead horse here but....

Are VOBSUB the same as srt.? I am wondering if I can burn a straight copy into Mpeg4 and then attach srt. files later. Then I can watch the videos on Apple devices such as the iphone. If the answer is NO, then why would some video watching applications have the choice to use subtitles or not. A simple yes you can or no you cant is a good enough answer for me.....

No, srt and vobsubs are completely different. srt subtitles are text based, while vobsubs are image based.

Alright. I have a MAC and would like a quick breakdown of what I have to do to get files that I can turn subtitles on or off on my Iphone or other devices. Can I extract the subtitles from the DVD I have? I live in Japan and all the DVDs I have include subtitles in the DVD. I can only burn in these subtitles so far. How can I convert them to srt. files and then `mux` or whatever it is called to have them optional in my iPhone. What are the steps if I have original DVDs that include Subtitles? Thanks

Check you the first post in this topic. And yes, converting DVD subtitles -> usually SRT requires Windows.

There's always this: http://www.objectifmac.com/dsubtitler.php (no update since 2005 - I wonder whether it still works) or maybe Avidemux: http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/ (never used it for that, but it's supposedly capable of OCR).

Or, find an existing SRT file on the web.

Hi !

I'm new in this forum and nor very familiar with this tool.
Before I found this sticky topic, I've been trying for hours to covert a DVD from an .iso format to a .mkv format so I can have it read by the XBMC version installed on my Apple TV2.
I would like to have, for this movie and for many others a file which contains the original language and the French language and to have - at least - the French subtitles that can be displayed or not (what is so called "soft subtitles", right ?)

I managed to have "hard subtitles" thanks to handbrake while checking "bunred it" option or no subtitle at all when unchecking this option.

If I understand the tutorial of the first post, it is normal that I can't reach a multilanguage file with soft subtitles only with handbrake. Am I right ?
So I have to mount my .iso in a virtual drive, than convert it into a single .VOB with DVDDecrypter, then open the IFO with SubRip and it's tedious and quite long stage.

At this step I had several difficulties :
- I had a message from SubRip telling that "Subtitles contains non-standard characters" and propose to save the file "as Unicode instead of ANSI".This is probably due to French language including accents. So I openned this .srt file with norepad and converted it into an ANSI file.

But, when I import those two ANSI .srt files (one converted from Unicode and the other one natively ANSI) into Handrake and launch the conversion, I still haven't any subtitles displayed in the video.

So I guess it is a problem of charset that is not UTF-8 in the .srt SubRip created but I do not know how to know the charsets of my files and so the parameter to modufy in handbrake.

Thanks for the help !

XBMC supports vobsubs in mkv, so the issue may be with your encode... an activity log for one of your failed encodes would be beneficial. See the red box at the top of the page.

Thanks for your reply.
In fact, I did not test the .mkv file obtained after handbrake encode it on my AppleTV through XBMC because when I play it on my WinXP PC with MediaPlayerClassicHC the subtitles do not show up.

I openned both .srt files (English and French subs) obtained with SubRip with Notepad and saved then as UTF-8 text files but it still don't work.

Here is my activity log (altough I did not wait for handbrake to finish the encoding, as I could not display the subtitles in the unfinished .mkv)

I'm pretty sure this is a charset issue but I don't know how to solve it.
How can I know the charset of the .srt file issued from SubRip so I can modify the charset parameter in Handbrake ?

Thanks for the help.
Much appreciated.

Re: Hard and Soft Subtitles Guide

Post by Squishiee »

i have 2 questions to ask ^^
the first one is what is the difference between "forced only" "burned-in" and "default"?
the second one was also addressed my tnsa, i've found that if some of longer subtitles are being chopped off...why is this happening? :(

i am very new at this, so please correct me if i didn't write anything clearly ^^
