Help with my bluray encodes

Post by africanmarty »

hi guys i have finished backing up my dvd collection using handbrake with x264 and wanted to do the same with my bluray and HD-DVD's but i'm getting about 2fps on 1080p and 5fps on 720p encodes (source my HDDVD/Blurays ripped to hard drive). I think the settings I'm using in the advanced tab might be over the top. if you guys could have a look at them for me (i have added my log) and see where i am going wrong ( i think i might have some of them on overkill and thats why its taking so long). The PC I'm doing the encode on is an AMD quad core 965 @ 3.8Ghz using windows XP w/ 4 gig of ram. Also is RF:19.25 ok for 720p and RF18 for 1080p ?? thats what i have read.

Hoping to hear from you guys.

Regards Marty.

merange=64? Where do people get this retarded [censored]? 6 refs for HD? Great way to drive profile inflation.
Dump all that [censored], go back to the High Profile preset basics, and work up from there.

Only for crazies. Try RF 21-22 for 720p and 23-25 for 1080p to start. It's a good idea to encode at the original resolution unless all your playback targets are limited to 720p. Use higher rate factors if you want smaller files.

wow relax. i admit i am ignorant about handbrake but you dont have to fly off the handle. I am going to use the default 'high' profile with a RF value of 23 and see how that goes. Then use the same settings and try a RF value of 25 to see if there is a noticable difference. Thanks for the advice. will post back.

Regards Marty.

merange=64 sure is dumb. 6-9 refs is okay for 720p, though, depending on whether the content is animated/still or not.

I wouldn't call it crazy, just demanding or videophilic. 23-25 sounds too high to me, but I haven't done 1080p encoding before. The high-quality range recommended by x264 devs for HD is 20-22, which seems fair to me since I encode DVDs at 18-19.

ok so i did a test on my sorority row bluray using the default 'high' profile with a RF value of 23 and the results were ok, but not up too par for me. so i am doing another test using RF22 and see if the results are better. also i was surprised that the finished encode with RF23 (resolution 1920x816 - was a 2.35 movie) and DTS pass thorough the mkv file was only 3.6GB, i thought with a resolution of 1920x816 the final files size would be alot bigger.

ok so i did three tests all on 'high' profile defaults with constant quality values RF23,22 & 20. And i ended up on RF20 wich gave me a 7GB file (including DTS pass through audio) the file size is still small when compared to the 24GB original. And it looks fantastic. the others (RF23 & 22) looked average. Now some maydisagree but to me the file size is quite small and video quality is fantastic.

Here is my profile for 1080p encoding. On Core i5-750 I am getting 22-23fps in pass1 and 15-17fps in pass2.

user_profiles.xml in %appdata%\Handbrake directory:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<ArrayOfPreset xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
  <Preset>

    <PictureSettings>false</PictureSettings>
    <Version>svn3154</Version>
  </Preset>

Don't see what's so "insane" about the quality...you're using medium-quality options :P
