Handbrake finishes conversion, ITunes can't open

I have a weird problem, I'm trying to convert a dvd for itunes use, and if I stop it at 10% or so, the file works just fine, but if I let it finish the conversion, itunes won't open and can't import the m4v file. Basically, as long as I don't let it finish all the way, the file works fine, the minute the file finishes, it doesn't worlk

It's hard to tell without the encode log (your log only shows the initial DVD scan), which means we don't know what preset/encode settings you're using.

By any chance, is your encode > 4GB?

The finished encode was about 5.7 gb. I do NOT have large file size selected. Should I try to select that? Where is the encode log so I can post that?

Haha, yes. You must check that box if your file ends up being more than 4GB. That is undoubtedly your problem (and a rather frequent one around here it seems... sometimes I wonder if the devs should just enable that by default).

On a side note, what the heck settings are you using that is giving you 5.7GB? That sounds way too huge for just a standard DVD rip.

This has been suggested before. Unfortunately, 64 bit formatted mp4 files aren't as widely supported especially with hardware based players.

Oh yeah, those settings could use tweaking for sure. Where did you get those to start with? Are you encoding for playback on TV or other devices?

For one thing, as you might read other places around here, the "percentage" for quality is a useless number and I believe is getting eliminated. For future reference, there is essentially no reason to go below a CQRF of 17 (currently aka 65%).

As for the blockiness and other image issues, that's where you should tweak some other settings. For example:

At a minimum I would do Reference frames = 3. Bframes = 3. Subpixel Motion Estimation = 7. Weighted b-frames on. 8x8 DCT on. CABAC on (unless ripping for iPod or apple tv). Note that these settings will slow your encode some, but should give you a desired quality at muuuch lower file sizes (I get DVD quality movies on average of 2GB).

If you still have issues with blocky pixels (especially on solid colors), enabling No Fast-P-Skip might help that, or possibly No DCT-Decimate.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I'm not an expert, but I've used handbrake a few years and read through the guide and wiki several times.
