Normal v. High Profile size disparity?

Post by pfurrie » Sun Jan 17, 2010 2:09 am

I read in one of the forum posts:

"1) normal is faster
2) high profile is smaller."

However... I've found that my high profile encodes are about 25% larger (byte-wise) than then same exact DVD encoded with the normal profile. And looking at the output of the two, I'm finding it hard to see the difference (visually).

I got the impression that high profile (which uses loose anamorphic) would be more prone to have more efficient compression. High profile does turn on two streams of audio to Normal's one, but I wouldn't think that the additional audio channel would eat up that much additional disk space.

And while I'm here... another question:
Loose anamorphic is supposed to be able to (potentially, dependent on the resolution of the original material) produce better compressed output than strict anamorphic. What is the processing penalty incurred by converting a video with one resolution into a different resolution? (as is done with loose). Does this mean that strict anamorphic, while not as compression friendly, will be faster due to not having to resize the original material in order to achieve resolutions which are divisible by 16?

HP preset includes AC3 passthrough by default, Normal does not. For a comparison you need to either include or exclude the AC3 passthrough. For a typical DVD encode AC3 can easily be a quarter of the filesize.

The High Profile preset created a video track that is ~3% smaller with better quality (1/(1-SSIM) is ~5% higher).

As mduell correctly guessed, the file size difference is entirely due to the AC3 passthrough track.

That doesn't mean that the High Profile preset will always produce smaller video tracks (grainy sources will often be larger using High Profile as it uses 8x8dct), but the High Profile encodes will always be higher quality.

Your other questions have been answered, so I'll deal with this:

Loose anamorphic is supposed to be able to (potentially, dependent on the resolution of the original material) produce better compressed output than strict anamorphic. What is the processing penalty incurred by converting a video with one resolution into a different resolution? (as is done with loose). Does this mean that strict anamorphic, while not as compression friendly, will be faster due to not having to resize the original material in order to achieve resolutions which are divisible by 16?
Resizing is extremely fast and doesn't bottleneck at all. Its drawback, theoretically, is deterioration of image quality since the resizer has to remap points inexactly to a resolution that's only slightly different from the original. Loose anamorphic therefore results in negligible deterioration in exchange for slightly more/less pixels (depending on whether it was resized up or down) and a negligibly higher compression efficiency.

Strict anamorphic is the way to go.
