Choppy or laggy playback

My Comp specs: OS - Windows 7 home premium
3gb ram
2.1GHz CPU and the media player I use is windows media player. I'm not sure what version of windows media player, but since its on Windows 7 I think its 12. I Hope that info will help anybody trying to help me resolve my issues. Please Help. Thank You.
