Trouble with Batman Begins

Post by jdm »

I've ripped the movie from my Blu-ray disc, using AnyDVD HD. I then run it through Clown_BD to create a single .m2ts file keeping the audio tracks I want.

The .m2ts plays fine in MediaPortal, MPC-HC , no problems.

I've tried for a while now to use Handbrake to turn it into an MKV and it would keep dying at around 90% completion. I tried with 0.9.3, then with several of the snapshot releases, and now with the official 0.9.4

I think I've finally figured out the reason it keeps stopping, but I don't know why it's doing it. I just noticed that when Handbrake scans the file, it comes up with a running time of 2 hours 12 minutes. When I play it with MPC, it says 2 hours 20 minutes. Open it in Mediainfo, and it concurs. 2 hours 20 minutes. So why is Handbrake seeing it as 8 minutes shorter than it really is?

I've used the same process for many of my other Blu-ray and HD-DVD titles and so far this is the only one I haven't had success with.

System information: Handbrake 0.9.4 on Windows 7 x64

Here is the logfile from the scan.

To figure out why it stops encoding 8 minutes before the end, the encode log would help a lot too.

Can do. I figured the problem was with the scanning part, since it was reporting the movie as being 8 minutes shorter than it was, but here is the encode log as well.

The encode and the scan logs are from different sessions. The encode is the one I tried last night. The scan is from this morning. I re-ripped the disc, re-ran it through ClownBD, then was going to try Handbrake one more time when I noticed the time discrepency. I'll try handbrake again, just in case the log I have attached isn't enough, and I'll turn up the verbosity level this time.

Well, there might be useful information at the end of the log (which we're still missing).

Also, what does Mediainfo report for the frame count?

That is how the log ended. I get a windows popup saying Handbrake ended unexpectedly. And the CLI window shows it sitting at 90 odd %
What I posted above the the entire contents of the encode log. It literally ends with the line [20:01:53] sync: first pts is 3754

I'm running another encode now, with the log verbosity turned up.

Here is what Mediainfo has to say about the file.

Well, looks like something in your source is causing HandBrake to crash. This may happen sometimes when the source is VC-1, as ffmpeg can have trouble with this codec.

When you say "ffmpeg has trouble with it", is it the version I have installed on my PC (from the K-lite codec pack I use) or is the encoder built into Handbrake and I'm pretty much SOL for this particular movie?

Neither. HandBrake uses ffmpeg internally as the decoder ;-)

But closer to your second guess.

Ah! That would explain why it plays fine in MPC and MediaPortal, since I'm using the MPC codec with them.

I was having the same issue using 0.9.4 on Win7. In fact, with the exception of a 14 minute clip from NIN live HD DVD handbrake was "unexpectedly" quiting with every HD file I tried. Last night I downloaded the snapshot version and this has tentatively solved the problem.

For reference I am using AnyDVD HD to rip Batman Begins from HD DVD(and all other HD DVD's for that matter) I am then using clown_bd to de- then remux them to .m2ts (as I don't particularly care about chapters). I then use handbrake snapshot to convert to m4v using appletv preset changing the width to 1280 (with a resulting resolution of 1280x576 (if memory serves). As of this morning I have "successfully" encoded Batman Begins to m4v. I opened it in quicktime and quickly checked to see that the opening sequence was there, a random middle point was there and that the end (including the credits) was there. I'll give it a more thorough inspection when i get home but it appears that despite the altered length in handbrake the entire film is there.

UPDATE:
Yup, whole thing is there
