0.9.4 produces garbage

Post by Flo »

I've done several test encodes using Handbrake 0.9.4. and they all seem to result in garbage regardless of profile.

Image

I've been using 0.9.3 for a while and never encountered that particular problem. Even encoding the same clip using 0.9.3 and 0.9.4 results in a perfect conversion from the former, and garbage from the latter.

Most of my material is recorded from digital TV and often contains fast switches between progressive and interlaced frames. Is it possible that the "improved" h.264 codec is less capable of converting this? Even forced slow deinterlacing does not result in a good output from 0.9.4.

Your player apparently doesn't support weighted p-frame prediction. You can try adding weightp=0 to your x264 options.

Thanks for the quick help!

My conversions are usually meant for playback on Xbox 360 or PS3, but I only checked my 0.9.4 test clips in WMP12 (Windows 7). Ironically, the 360 seems to have no problems with the new clips.

Well that definitely sounds like it then (weighted P-frames), so adding weightp=0 should work.

Otherwise, assuming it works on the PS3 like it does on the 360, just use another player that supports weightp on your PC (e.g. VLC)…

It's definitely WMP's fault as it works fine in VLC and Zoom Player (with ffdshow). I don't usually use WMP, it was just convenient for some quick testing.

You can consider this problem solved. Thanks again!
