can't read dvd in vista

Post by h00ligan »

I ran into this under xp on a different machine, but it was sort of here and there - the same version (current) of handbrake won't get thru the reading process in vista - any ideas? I click read - get the click ok message, immediately the other screen comes up - whether i click it immediately or wait a few mins - read data does nothing - blank screen.

Tried on numerous dvd's... also given hb admin access and run it in compat. mode.... missing something for vista compatibility?

The reports i've heard are saying that the gui only works if you give the app admin properties.

Since you've done this I really have no idea why it doesn't work. I don't have Vista to test it out on so can't really say.

What are you using to remove copy protection? DVD43?

If so try the trial version of AnyDVD

I appreciate that, however i am aware of extracting a disc - the thing is, using anydvd works for any other application and this appears to be an application error with handbrake. It's a work around, sure, but it doesn't preclude the issue.

I just had success by going deeper into the permissions in Vista.

Right click and goto properties.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Advanced button.
Click your user name the system is running under.
Click Edit.
Click your user name again.
Click Edit again.
Check Full Control (or make sure all boxes are checked for allow).
Click Ok.
Click Ok.
Click Ok.
Goto the compatibility tab.
Check "Run this program as an administrator" (if not already checked)

This seemed to solve all my problems.

I also checked "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP SP2". Not sure if that really helped or not.

If you still having problems, goto the permissions again and make sure SYSTEM is allowed all access under the Security tab, just click Edit.

Hope this helps someone!
