QSV encoded file-size larger than source

Post by tjsuominen »

Description of problem or question:
QSV encoding produced larger file than source.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
MakeMKV 1.4.1 produced Matroska file, size ~16.6 Gigs. Encoded (with success) using my preset (see log). Output file-size ~17.6 Gigs (= ~1 Gig bigger than the source file). What could cause this? The source was Music Concert BD (Nighwish - Vehicle of Spirit; Disc 1). When encoding movies, they shrink (using same preset) in file-size significantly.

I did not yet try encoding the file without QSV.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Latest release - HandBrake 1.1.2 (2018090500) - 64bit

Operating system and version:
Windows 10 Pro Creators Update - 1803.

The settings you selected: a low efficiency encoder in its lowest efficiency setting (preset: speed!) and a reasonably high quality setting.

Hi @mduell,

I don't bite that. With the SAME preset settings encoding a BD Movie (source 27 gigs) became 5,5 gigs after encoding...

Sure, you're using quality based encoding, size will vary depending on the complexity of the material.

Also with no log we have no idea if you used the same settings.

Also the file size of the source is not a great indicator, since the priorities and tradeoffs of the person who did the prior encode vary.

You can spend a lot of time reading up on how video encoding works, or just accept it, but you're not going to find a different answer where it magically does whatever you expect at this point.

Appreciated, thx.

The preset used in both (Movie, Concert) is in the 1st post as link to pastebin.

Yes, I'm absolutely no expert in video encoding - just wondering what could be so significantly complex in the concert MKV file that it does not shrink at all. Yet, I do accept that there's no magic (in terms of filesize :D).

Still, wondering.

Can you post the log for your movie encode please.

I encoded a movie, source MKV size ~34 Gig > after encoding with my preset (the SAME I used for the concert) file-size ~3 Gig with good quality, no errors whatsoever.

Here's HB log of that:

So, any further thoughts on the concert encoding file-size (when compared to movie) with the same preset?

Any further analysis / speculation on the case aka filesize on the music concert vs. movie case?

Appreciated :)

What module said.

Also, while using Intel QSV will typically be fast, you can expect larger file sizes.

Larger than the source? Same preset, for movie, typically shrinks down to 20-25% compared to source. For a concert, size increased compared to source. But ok, things can happen, I rest my case.

Will depend greatly on the movie when you're using a different rate control method than the previous encode!

See also the denoise filters. Cleaning up source noise and grain can increase encoding efficiency.
