subtitles for CLI newb

I have read and re-read the 0.9.4 CLI help pages and I can't quite get the subtitle syntax down. What I am trying to do (ideally) is capture ALL English subtitles, whether "forced", close captioned, director's commentary, or "primary" (i.e., when the default audio track is not English). Furthermore, I believe (?) that in 0.9.4 there is a way to get these without "burning" them in. In other words, I'd like to be able to 'turn off' all subtitles (or, perhaps, choose a second or third subtitle track which is 'none'?) while watching the video (e.g. in Boxee, which does permit subtitle track selection). I hope this is all clear... I am (putatively) a native English speaker so I can't blame any translation difficulties!

I've tried several options, but I'm getting nowhere. Any suggestions would be humbly appreciated. Thank you.
