That depends what settings you use. If it plays on an unhacked ATV, it won't be high profile. Not that this makes so much difference as that fact that you transcoded it.

There really are a lot of threads about this already, and as I recall it's in the FAQ - certainly in the Guide.

It's pretty unlikely. HB is great because it does what it does and doesn't dabble in too many areas. There are other tools available that do this, and do it well.

So are you saying that the two different h.264 types supported by the iPod Classic are really the same? Also, are you saying that this matches the 'h.264 (iPod)' setting in Handbrake? I'm saying I think they probably are. "low-complexity" was a term Apple coined for what the iPod supports...

Umm. Main profile is way better, and incompatible. I think you're reading too much into the lack of the "low-complexity" tag, it was never an official designation afaik. The chances are that they use the exact same chips as all video-capable iPods, and can therefore play the same stuff.

Absolutely, re-ripping is the best way. Though you shouldn't have to re-encode for an iPhone - it's got the same capabilities as the iPod.

I assume it'll be the same case as before - the iPod will play anything below the macroblock limit (so 720*480 won't work, but 720*3xx would), but iTunes won't let you transfer it.

We'll know soon though. :)

I didn't check the title: I confess ignorance on that. What other information would be helpful? Well, it'd be highly unusual for it to be split, but you're encoding an unusual DVD so I just wondered :) Ripping with a separate app is usually good practice, HB's not great at getting over some recent ...

I should think we're talking about blockiness and smearing for artefacts. The dirtier the source, the greater the bitrate you'll need for it to look good.

HB can do it - not in the mp4 container though, because its not allowed. Works in .avi though.

The ATV can't play or pass AC3 through without being hacked - I believe the latest release of Perian may allow it, but I'm not 100% sure.

Re: 16 of one, 9 of the other...

3. Now, interestingly enough, the release of v0.9.0 also has a solution for this problem: keep the file squished at 720x480 and just tell the software program (VLC, QuickTime, etc.) to stretch it out to 853x480 as it plays it. By the way, anamorphic output has been around longer than 0.9. Seems rel...

*Sighs*. Let's not get into "he started it" territory, please. By the way, anamorphic output has been around longer than 0.9. We've pointed you towards it before.

Heh. I assume they'll be timed text subtitles, which HB can't do and probably won't do - suitable open-source OCR tools just don't really exist. But, we'll wait and see.

Well, did you verify stuff such as the title being the correct length before encoding? It's just possible that the video is split over two titles. It could be copy protection, but you don't mention if you ripped properly first or if HB was encoding from the DVD. There are probably lots of possibilit...

Or does this mean I can pick the Apple TV setting? Heh, I'm afraid not. Initial indications are that [higher bitrates] may be possible, but with some pretty big caveats - simply encoding to 2500 without setting some other stuff correctly will result in a movie that skips and jumps a fair amount. It might be worth trying with the new version of MacTheRipper - 3r14, or something like that - if you can get hold of it. They're being kinda tight (in my opinion) and requiring "donations" for an official download though.

The 7MB one could indicate you ran out of memory there. I'd say either that or copy protection made it choke. But you say the others all finished fine apart from the silly file size, so I'm a bit stumped.

So you did, my apologies. Missed it.

Are you using 1 or 2 passes? 2 passes should be much more likely to hit your target, but it's missing by an awful lot...

Is it consistent on this disc? How about other discs? Is it only when you use the preset, or does it happen if you manually set the target?
