I was doing the same with making short time specific encodes. I did try the whole file and put it to ultra fast and got the same issue, but I should probably try a slower speed to see if that makes any difference.

Strangely enough, the latest Nightly wouldn't install for me either. Same thing happens, I try to launch the executable but it never actually launches. I was hoping it was just a current Nightly issue, but maybe it's a Windows thing? I'm on 8.1 64-bit.

Maybe give MakeMKV a shot. It's similar in that it will decrypt the blu ray for you, but it will output the raw files from the blu ray in an MKV wrapper. You would then load those MKVs in Handbrake. I had the same problem with Mad Max Fury Road. My solution was to rip the video and audio into two separate files from the blu ray. Encode the video through handbrake as normal, and use MKVmerge to remux the audio with the video. I pass through all of my audio so it wasn't a big deal.

I haven't been able to get the same quality as x264 with any significant file size savings (however with significantly larger encode times). And if I use anything but the grain tune, it just smears out the the fine detail and grain and looks like garbage. Basically what streaming services look like.

I guess I should have specified my source. Yeah, I'm using an MKV from MakeMKV. It really only takes like a minute or two to scan, and then a few minutes to start the encoding process. It's not a big deal though for whenever Handbrake supports Atmos.
