If this happens to me when I try and use Handbrake to directly rip from the DVD itself, wouldn't that lend itself to something within the encoder messing up?

I will also add that I have had this happen using both the extraction built-in to Handbrake, as well as using Title Only mode on MtR.

i also have an intel mac and have just made an interesting discovery. i have noticed a direct link between the dropped audio and a severe decrease in encode performance. i was encoding "robocop" ripped using MTR 2.66 and at about 80% of the second pass i noticed the encode speed go down f...

Very good to hear... DPL2 is a great alternative to DD, and the results can be pretty impressive. With this and the anamorphic setting, I'll finally have a quick and convenient way of ripping my DVDs at the best quality for AppleTV.

I've talked about it in the irc channel, but I'll add my experience in here as well. I've been having the same problem ripping episodes off of my X-Files Season 1 DVD set. It rarely fails at the same point during the encoding, and it does not matter if I grab it directly from the DVD or using MtR.

Re: Trying to answer the original question on this thread

Defining film vs video? Really? One is a reel. Another is a cassette. One records photons hitting light-sensitive chemicals on a piece of celluoid. The other records bits as magnetic charges on a piece of tape. Actually explaining the details of editing and telecining is not something I want to get...

I have been experiencing the same; everything is going fine then the encoding fps drops significantly and the audio disappears. This has happened on every title I've tried to rip from my X-Files Season One set. VisualHub is able to encode the entire file with no issues.

If your receiver is in DPL2 mode, it will attempt to output the audio using the DPL2 processes. So you should hear something from all of the speakers in a surround environment. The results will vary based on the source of course, and would definitely sound better if the source was optimized for DPL2...

I had a similar issue when trying to stream content from my iMac to my AppleTV when both were using 802.11n to connect to the network. Since my iMac is right beside my router, I ran an ethernet cable and it is working perfectly again. The only time I see jerky playback is if my computer is trying to...

As I recall, maurj (who wrote that feature) said you need to use the .m4v file extension for iTunes to recognize the chapter markers. Wow, that was it. Changed the extension from .mp4 to .m4v and it works fine. Now that you mention it, I do somewhat remember reading that in the IRC channel at one p...

Yes, sorry I should have given more information.

I am outputting a MP4 file using the AVC codec (x264 main). My average bitrate is 2250, and the audio is being downmixed to AAC 2.0 at 256kbps. The files plays fine in both QT and ATV, minus the chapters.

I'm having an issue with the latest SVN and chapter markers not being created. I'm ripping off of my X-Files Season 1 DVD, and while each title has a number of chapters on the disc, the chapters are not created in the resulting file. Anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing the problem, or ...

While the software may not support it at this time, the hardware defintely has the ability to output 5.1. If you look at the first picture on this page from anandtech ( http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2951&p=7 ), you'll see a Realtek ALC885, which according to the specs on their webs...
