Re: Automatic resize
The official 720p presets will in this case, resize to anamorphic 1280x720. Meaning, the video will be stored squeezed into that exact resolution, with the correct aspect restored on playback. That way, you get the maximum vertical storage resolution.

If memory serves correctly, Apple doesn’t ship watch. You may need to get it from homebrew or find source to compile.

Re: Request status from background running HandBrake
You could pipe stderr to a file and read the contents periodically using tail and watch.
Something like HandBrakeCLI ... 2>/progress.log
And in another terminal, watch 'tail progress.log'
You may also wish to use tr to convert carriage returns to linefeeds.

Re: Unexpected performance question
You also have a 5.1 audio file at 224 kbps on the Mac. Might want to change that to 640. Settings differences aside, NLMeans is memory bound on most systems, so CPU clock/cores is less important than having the fastest memory I/O and a large on-chip cache. So this could be architectural differences ...

Great to hear. I knew this was somehow improved in the nightly but I wasn't sure the details, so I'm glad John could point you in the right direction.

Re: Ripping BR/DVD as HEVC 10/12-bit?
Indeed, it's a bit heavy to rewrite HandBrake's pipeline to support 10-/12-bit YUV, not to mention other color formats. John's made some progress in private, if I recall correctly.

In theory, they should always be smaller given 8-bit input. In practice, I've seen some larger.

Re: Ripping BR/DVD as HEVC 10/12-bit?
Indeed. In practice, 10-/12-bit files sometimes turn out smaller even with an 8-bit source. So your mileage may vary.

Re: Ripping BR/DVD as HEVC 10/12-bit?
Down the road it won't be pointless, but no ETA on that. Currently, anything HandBrake opens is converted to 8-bit at some point.

Re: Framerate conversion PAL->NTSC-DVD back to PAL/mkv
Yeah, you need a decimate filter to really get that right. Try the nightly build if you get a chance, a few things have been tweaked and I’d like to know if it helps. We’re close to HandBrake 1.1.0 and it’s quite stable.

Re: Ripping BR/DVD as HEVC 10/12-bit?
Not really. BD/DVD are 8-bit and so is HandBrake’s pipeline.

The EEDI2 presets are going to be as good as it gets for deinterlacing quality in HandBrake, but they're slower.

Re: How to denoise dark parts
Perhaps you can show us a screenshot of this noise?
Usually when you’re seeing dark noise even after denoising, it means your display isn’t properly calibrated and is increasing the brightness and contrast of the dark parts.

Re: Keyframe frequency (Handbrake for HLS)
Ah, sorry. mduell had it correct and I fubared it. So if your frame rate is 29.97 or 30, you probably want keyint=150:min-keyint=150 which is 5*30, etc.

Re: Keyframe frequency (Handbrake for HLS)
To be clear, using a HandBrake preset using the x264 encoder, add keyint=5:min-keyint=5 to the additional options field on the video tab. The Production presets in the nightly build do something similar, for reference.

Re: Handbrake Video Encoder setting for Vita (low size result)?
The description of the Playstation 540p30 preset is “H.264 video (up to 540p30) and AAC stereo audio, in an MP4 container. Compatible with Playstation Vita.” I suggest using that and if you want smaller files, lower the quality.

Hi Ricky01, The Apple 1080p60 Surround preset (under Devices) is designed for Apple TV and will work with the 4/4K. If you need an actual 4K preset, the nightly build has a new preset titled Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround that will make its way into the next HandBrake release in the coming weeks, ho...

The problem here is less about the sensitivity of combing detection or false positives, which we can talk about. It’s your attitude on the forum. You can be right and you can be wrong, but you will not throw your weight around here. You have a tendency to be matter-of-fact and antagonistic. I’m aski...

Re: Handbrake using < 55% of my dual CPU System for h.254
It's safe to leave decomb and the combing detection enabled; otherwise, it wouldn't be the default. It should have no effect on progressive material.
