Crunch = elgato = Quicktime encoding, not FFmpeg nor anything original. Anyone still interested in H.264 instead of x.264? Now, what would be smart, is if Roxio returned a favor to elgato and let them include an "export to EyeTV" choice --- it would create the .eyetv package file etc. and ...

Sorry, forgot to mention I didn't play back what I have on an AppleTV (I don't have one.) I realize that's potentially another variable. Not sure why 2-pass would cause the issue for you, particularly since you specified a workable bitrate (assuming you meant k bps.) You mentioned using HB's default...

I just now played back that scene with Quicktime, but on my monitor enlarged the window to 1553 x 652 pixels. Looks incredible. Don't know if this will help, but just last week I encoding this movie using the AppleTV preset + 2-pass. 2500kbps target bitrate. With anamorphic encoding this plays back ...

Well I have not done anything different with VisualHub that i did with Handbrake. I think you have. You just haven't discovered what it is yet. The very fact that these two apps have very different interfaces almost guarantees that the settings will never be identical out of the box. Both apps have...

Here's what works for me.

1) Import video
2) Do a Get Info
3) Select default artwork and delete (leave Get Info window open)
4) Paste in new artwork; click OK

If you skip step 3, tell iTunes to trash the video and go back to step 1.

And when you choose anamorphic, take a look at the numbers for:

Source
Output
Anamorphic Output

Anamorphic Output will indicate what you get when you play back the file (i.e. when the player plays the file, sees the anamorphic flag and says, "oh, I need to stretch this beyond 720 ...)

4:3 content isn't anamorphically stored, so no --- you would NOT use HB's anamorphic option for that. The anamorphic process is similar to an "encode/decode" sort of process; you don't want one half of the equation to occur without the other. This is a good primer: http://www.thedigitalbit...

maximthemagnificent, you do not literally want the same aspect ratio the movie is encoded with, if it's an anamorphic DVD. Anamorphic DVDs squeeze a wide image into a more narrow 720x480 frame, creating a "funhouse" sort of effect; the player stretches it back later to present the proper a...

easterdonkey, from the looks of that thread you've linked to, you'll have to wait for geezerbuttz to release r15. But I'll say it again, these types of disks are exactly the kind that (IMO) should be returned. Deliberate bad mastering is evil incarnate. If they take a big enough hit to their profits...

I'll try this tomorrow. I thought I'd gone crazy these last 2 days. Thanks esb. I wouldn't have occurred to me that a preset would influence cropping. Here's the thread I almost started, but had decided to wait until I could play around some more: "Anamorphic output" size didn't equal actu...

Re: What's so wrong with xvid? (or better about x264)

I just don't understand why. For your current situation it probably doesn't matter much. The thing about video codecs and container formats, from what I've been able to glean, is that picking "the right one" seems to stand a better chance down the road of ensuring compatibility/performanc...

I tend to disagree --- not that it's custom per se but what Custom really means, i.e. that you've canceled your preset, not added to it. I understand that may change with a future release.

Re: Encoding on Dual 2.5Ghz G5 slow

When using HB 0.8.5b1 my encoding frame rate when using the HB-Ipod preset is only 10-11 FPS. ( Sounds low. I get an avg. of 13 or so on my 2.0 G5, 10.5 if surfing the Net or something else. And that's with a 2-pass AppleTV preset. I have 150-167% CPU usage. Make sure you aren't doing anything else...

A proper test likely isn't an audio file, but rather a video file with a surround-sound audio track as part of it. The difference is the file container, and how it gets encoded (which is why we're all here, right) and further how AppleTV treats what its fed. So just find a relevant chapter on a DVD ...

When you first load the movie into the GUI, does it report it as anamorphic, and if it does, is that because you have preferences set to turn on anamorphic encoding automatically? If so, deselect that preference, quit HB. Launch HB again and load the movie again. Does it now still say Output = 640x3...
