You will lose quality no matter what, even at 3/4 the source bitrate, or even at a bigger file size if you encode MPEG-2 to H.264. Yes, H.264 is equivalent in quality/efficiency/compression at about 50%, even 33% in some cases, of MPEG-2's file size. But only if you encode to MPEG-2 and H.264 from t...

That's not enough information. Are you using a high rez or low rez profile? Or, what bitrate are you using? For a final iPod file at 640x480, movie-length (about 90+ minutes), at a bitrate of 1000kbps to 1500kbps that sounds about right for the file sizes and the minimum to get decent to great quali...

yo know right, almsot everything form h264 High Profile is supported in QuickTime 7.2. One notable exception are pyramidal b-frames. ...and multiple reference frames that are higher than a few... no way QT yet can handle the full load of the H.264 standard, which is 16. Yes, Apple has recently expa...

HandBrake in Windows has no preview window (yet). You got 8x8dct working in QT? About cropping - strictly a matter of taste. Some like it and swear by it, others like me, avoid it. It's like me disagreeing with you that you chose a red car over a black car. I won't tell you whether to crop, or not, ...

If your encoded content is only for the iPod's small screen and no where else you can get away with almost any bad encode. You already have difficulty seeing movie details in the first place, so how would artifacting be an issue? My solution? Encode with MPEG-4 at 900kbps with 1-pass ABR. It will be...

Re: Good opinions, thanks.
@ Puzzler: However, some movies will look weak at 2000kbps so 2500kbps and even 3000kbps will show MUCH more noticable improvement and maybe only up to 3500kbps will the quality curve start to smooth out. Ah! So you are saying you have seen movies where you visually saw a difference between 2000 an...

I noticed that if you have a value in the 'Avg Bitrate' field and then type in a value into 'Target Size' whatever value that was in 'Avg Bitrate' disappears. Feature: There are three ways to specify bitrate: as % of original quality (CRF), as Avg Bitrate, or as Target Size. You can't specify more ...

Hey Michael, It's out of the box. I'm on Windows so I don't know if any hacks (yet) exist there for Apple TV. Note: To add, yes, even though I'm disappointed with Apple TV, and it's already useless in my home, and believe H.264 encoding is not worth it without some of its better features (ie:CABAC),...

I have a better idea than Eddyg. He has to stand on one leg, I do my encoding while sleeping - I'm that good! Seriously though Cass, the best way is to do your encoding overnight or when you're at work. Understand that encoding to something like H.264 is a CPU intensive process. Even with a D...

Kurtz, thank you for your posts. Nice of you to help out. I use Cabac on my PS3 and it plays great. it can also use high profile H.264 according the specs. :D :D :D the PS3 accepts the MP4/m4v but i cant find a way of selecting the second audio format from the menu.   @Rhester: Yes, ...

CABAC is one of the darlings of the H.264 standard. I refuse to encode without it, otherwise I personally would rather stick to DivX and save myself alot of pain. Anybody have a Windows solution? I have an Apple TV and I hate it. It stutters on all my CABAC encodes. I know Apple never guaranteed CAB...

I too am confident this is a CABAC issue. Forgive me mods if this is slightly off topic. I have had a few arguments (albiet of a gentle/respectful type) on this forum for Apple TV's (lack of) support of CABAC. APPLE TV DOES NOT SUPPORT CABAC. It's on the Apple site, and it's as so on my Apple TV. St...

It seems like developers this time around are falling behind the world of hardware which is moving quite fast. Threading a program over multiple cores is still quite difficult logistically, but it's the future. But here are some other options for you. With the latest HandBrake you can set the priori...
