Re: What happened to the "Target Size" quality option?
Its not about laziness, just convenience for those in a hurry/don't want to calculate things for every conversion. And for those that really cared about getting the most efficient conversion could do the calculating. As I said Im not trying to demand something, this function would just be very nice...

Re: What happened to the "Target Size" quality option?
I only have so much space and want to keep each feature length movie ~ 2GB in size. Thanks for the reply! A lot of movies don't need 2GB, even at 720p. By trying to hit a target of 2GB you're wasting a lot of space (which seems to be your main motivator) on movies that could be compressed further w...

Re: Normal vs. High Profile file size redux
I'm usually quite happy with the trade off between quality, file size and encoding times using Normal @ RF 20, but with the additional capabilities of the Apple TV 3, there are a few cases I thought might benefit from using High Profile. Shame there's no way to predict whether High Profile will prod...

Re: Normal vs. High Profile file size redux
Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of Constant Quality? Both presets are trying to hit the same quality, but one has more advanced compression methods at its disposal. I would have expected High Profile to hit the same (or slightly higher) quality more efficiently, but a 25% increase in file si...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
Would the heavy grain truly account for a 9-10GB difference though? At an RF of 18, sure. Most people here use 22 or higher for HD encodes. Also, how can you tell how much grain a movie has? (Specifically, I mean, so i can adjust the RF). Simply looking at the movie, or screenshots of it, would be ...

Normal vs. High Profile file size redux
So far it has been my understanding that, assuming the same constant quality RF and disregarding the extra AC-3 track, a High Profile encode should produce a smaller file than a Normal encode of the same source. This has also been implied in the AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) thread. High Prof...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
Both Hop and The Descendants have fairly heavy grain. So with your low RF values, you're wasting a lot of bitrate on accurately preserving noise.

Re: Ripping TV episodes.
I also just want to check one thing, by ripping with 'MakeMKV' first then running the .MKV file through HB at the settings I would if I was actually ripping from the disc with HB the quality will still be the same? MakeMKV doesn't make any changes to the content, it only removes the copy protection...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
IIRC, The Prestige was full of very dark scenes. It would be interesting to see comparison screenshots of those in 720p and 1080p, particularly with regards to shadowy areas. The higher compression of the store-bought 1080p files does come at a cost, even in cases where the 1080p versions aren't sma...

What are you using the play the files? Anything recent (like VLC 2.x) or maybe just an old WMP?

Re: mp2 passthru
It's not the most convenient solution, but if you want to preserve the mp2 track, you could always mux it back into the converted file with something like YAMB.

Re: mp2 passthru
All of my DVB recordings have 192k MP2 audio, which is fairly low quality to begin with, and I haven't noticed any degradation in quality after transcoding to 160k AAC using FAAC.

Re: How to add subpictures (subtitles?)
is MMG mkvmerger GUI? Yes. I have the idx and sub files under the same directory as the mkv does. Should I just add the mkv and idx file? or append the idx file? Add the mkv and idx as input files. The converted subtitles should then show up in the track list (as vobsub) along with everything that ...

It's gone. It's not coming back. A simple search would have turned up literally dozens of threads asking the same thing.

Re: How to add subpictures (subtitles?)
Convert to idx/sub and then add the idx via MMG. Make sure the matching idx and sub files are in the same directory, but only add the idx (it'll grab the subtitles out of the sub automatically).

Re: How to add subpictures (subtitles?)
Handbrake does not support PGS subtitles. You'll have to convert them to something else first if you want Handbrake to process them.

It also has limited support for MPEG-4 Part 2. As quoted above, "MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats".

No, but you can install libdvdcss to do it. Still, it's better for the disc and drive to rip before encoding.

Re: Keep same video quality while changing file type
H.264 is only one MPEG-4 implementation (MPEG-4 Part 10 to be exact). Standard MPEG-4 usually means MPEG-4 Part 2, as implemented by DIVX/XVID, etc.
The "MP4" container is actually MPEG-4 Part 14. Confused yet? :p

Click on Source / Folder and select the folder that contains your files. Any valid video files are then added under the Title menu.

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
I'm planning to get a time capsule. I imagine that would help? Can't see how it would. The Time Capsule can't act as an iTunes server. I'm using a 2011 Macbook Pro-- would it be helpful to connect it and/or the ATV 3 w/ethernet rather than using wifi? Most definitely. A wired connection, even at &q...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
The Apple TV 3 only has a 100 Mbit Ethernet port, but that's still plenty even for streaming 1080p content. If you're using WLAN, maybe you're on a crowded channel or there's interference. Would also be interesting to know what you're streaming from. Under normal circumstances, buffering should only...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
As for your question, I assumed a larger file size would take longer to buffer over my LAN-- which is tied in with my internet connection speed (currently 3mbps), no? Sounds like this is wrong  Under normal circumstances, streaming traffic between your computer and your Apple TV should never ...
